So with great effort and pulling every string I could, I managed to get a press pass to shoot the hottest show around, Roger Waters' The Wall.
If you don't know, it's a huge production.

As I waited behind the sold pour 19,000+ Rose Garden Arena for my pass, I talked with a couple of press photographers. Neither was born when Pink Floyd's The Wall was released in 1979. One was going to shoot with an 8mm fisheye. You can see his pic here.

I think the 8mm was a tad too wide but he did a good job. I'll let you judge how I did. I shot a lot with the 17mm (on a Canon 60D), some with a Canon AF 50/1.4 and very few with the Canon 135/2 L. We were confined to the pit area and only allowed to shoot the first five songs. On certain songs we were moved to the sides.

I've seen this happening a lot lately.

Everyone is awed by the scale and intensity of the show. The Wall itself is 140 yards long! In case you wondered, front row seats went for $2500 USD!

Roger makes his entrance among the most intense pyrotechnics that I've ever seen.

Yes, the top of my head did get singed!

Roger was on his game!

Local kids from Portland's Sound Roots School of Modern Music got the chance of a lifetime to perform with Roger, who chose them after seeing their video.

The Teacher must be fifty feet tall!

After several songs, press photographers were escorted out and cameras confiscated until the show's end. A really amazing show which touches on many issues crucial to our world today. Don't miss it if you have the chance to see it. Roger says this may likely be his final tour.

A quickie cell phone pic from my seat.

There are a few more on my blog.

I saw this show in Boston last time they came around and it was an experience and a half

nice shots! number 7 and 8 of Roger are my favorites. He has such a sinister edge to his voice when he sings the equally sinister lyrics of the wall and I think you managed to pick op that in these shots, very well done!

The young kids even copied a London accent faithful to the original:-

Awesome lens

Thanks, everyone!

It was funny that when the photographers were leaving one of them told me he had problems with his AF. I had to smile because I had none with the manual focus lens. Old school FTW!

declen, it is an awesome lens. I think I did OK with it and do not regret my lens choice at all!

IAZA, thanks! It was unbelievably awesome!

Excalibur, funny! Great lip-sincing. Wink I see myself a little in the video as I know where I was at certain points. Tricky to shoot if you don't know what's coming. Compared with the other photographers, I think I did OK. The one thing I think I did better was capturing exciting images of Roger himself. Always room for improvement though. This guy bettered me on some levels.

Hari, thanks man!

Your shots are excellent, but maybe I missed it but you didn't say if you liked the music Wink
If you want to experiment with flare you would enjoy this, this version of the music was near to what I remember when the wall first came out:-

For anyone born after 1980 and are wondering what the fuss is all about enjoy Laughing BTW if you are affected by flashing lights beware.

I think I was two when The Wall came out. It's not my favourite Pink Floyd album. It's got to be Wish You Were Here for me.

Oh and ... great opportunity and great shots. I like them all.

I've been a Pink Floyd fan since the early '70's. Yeah, I'm an old head.

patrickh, haha! Yeah the hottest live show is a 68 year old guy playing an album recorded 33 years ago!
Why? Because it's great!

Excalibur, great video! As to the music, it was quite good. RW has, as you would expect, some very good musicians. Several guitarists, one is that GE Smith guy from SNL (I think). The vocalists were very good too. Roger performed very well. In a show like this, it's hard to really tell who's doing what. The players are so tiny!

I could certainly hear the difference in feel when David Gilmour's leads were played. Fairly close, not the same, but really not that big of a deal for me. The overwhelming spectacle took over.

A must see for sure and also likely a last chance for people (formerly like me) who have never seen PF.

Brilliant work Mark!

Hari, please don't quote all the images in such large postings, especially if you only have to add one line of generic comment!
Your quotation causes this thread to open in double the time.
