Miranda 2.8 105mm on NEX-3

This is a very well built lens, feels like a Takumar.

However, it's not a great one, wide open it's crap, soft and glowly and lacks contrast.

Stopped down it's pretty good.

Wide open, awful:






Acceptable at f4:



Sharp at f5.6:



Quite good at f8:




All in all, pretty typical of a cheaper Japanese brand of the 1960s/70s, good stopped down but forget it at large apertures, not good. This lens is also seen as a Soligor in M42, not one I'd recommend, not awful but not great, just average.

100mm or 105mm? Soligor 105mm is made by Tokina and is reported as good lens. Soligor 100mm is made by Sun and is very good lens.
I think Miranda lens is different from both of them though.

erm that's my theory gone as I would have thought for a maker's lens around 100mm, a manufacturer would put in their best effort to turn out a decent lens. I wonder how many poor 90-105mm lenses there are around.

There is an identical Soligor branded version, it turns up on ebay from time to time, it has an interchangeable mount like the 3.5/200 Soligor, probably same maker, people say they are Tokinas.

There's the tiny Tokina 4/100, which isn't bad, but is also nothing special, Luis got some very nice results from his copy and I got some okay results from mine but it's a very average lens, needs a contrast boost in PP.

For me to want to use it, a 100mm-ish lens must be excellent as I have several Konica zooms that cover this range that are excellent.

Well, the wide open samples don't look too bad at web size but in full size they are really garbage, nothing is sharp and there is a lot of glow. I turned up the contrast of the wide open samples, they were very lacking in that regard.

Are older Soligors better?

I have some of the older line ups, and I feel like they have a decent IQ.
(The ones with T and H in the serial numbers and the ones with the old Soligor logo, both T-mount and m42)

Some of the older ones are very good indeed. The T serial number lenses are Tamron made and most of the H serial lenses are Tokina made. The older black preset model of the 105/2.8 with orange lettering is a nice lens, but vignettes heavily on full frame, much like the older 135/3.5.
