I really don't know what this lens is worth. Please tell me what you think, and please be honest. I'd rather know if I overpaid.

Click here to see on Ebay

In good working condition, it'd be worth about 220-250 but with the right idiot found on eBay someone will pay 300-350 for one for sure.

At $76 was it a good deal or bad? Good if you can find front+rear elements from another parts lens for <50. Acceptable deal if you need to pay a repair guy <180 for the work and parts.

That Ai ring is really rare nowadays and not unlikely that the Ai kit (factory Ai kit 21) itself would sell for $50-$75 if put up on eBay. For other lenses, the factory Ai kits still available in numbers sell for $30-$60 without the cost of labor or shipping.

The front and rear elements look quite bad, and if you want to use this lens to full potential you'd need to find a parts lens with good front and rear elements. Suitable parts lens could be dropped (metal barrel usually bends but does not break front element due to attaching mechanism takes the damage), have broken aperture mechanism or is inside fungus. Front or rear elements are easy to disassemble, clean and use as parts. The cost of labor involved varies, my Nikkor repair guy would fix it for <100 if I'd give him a parts lens to pick the front and rear lens elements' replacements.

The focusing lag is easy to fix by a qualified repairman, my repair guy would charge <60 to do it including re-lube and adjustment.

In good working condition, it performs to 4 stars on a scale of 0 to 5. Center sharpness is excellent at all apertures, but corners won't be excellent until f/11. Pixel peepers would need to stop it down to f/8 to satisfy IQ quality throughout a full frame sensor (crop users will like it from wide open). Lots of resolving power but quite heavy vignetting wide open, not an issue stopped down. CA you will notice in extreme corners but center is not troubled by it.

Here's a story of how this lens was developed.

http://imaging.nikon.com/history/nikkor/20/index.htm

Thank you, for the excellent info. I will try it as is, and watch for a parts lens. I think I can do the repairs myself. It took 15 minutes of hard thinking to decide to buy this, and a little quick research.
I decided to take the risk, based on the fact that I can't afford a nice one, what I thought they were worth, the AI conversion, free shipping, and mainly I really wanted this lens. Very Happy
EDIT
The size of this lens is another reason. Height 35.5mm, Diameter 63.5mm, and weight 209 Grams. Should be a nice lens size wise for my Panasonic G1.

The damage to the front lens wasn't as bad as in the photo. He photoshopped it to make it stand out more. I've had the lens sense Friday but the weather has been stormy.
I can't test it properly until my shoulder/neck heals. My MRI is tomorrow.
So this is set to A mode with auto ISO and white balance. This is on my Panasonic G1.
It looks like I missed focus on the second Nikkor shot, but I tried multiple shots that were indentical.

The comparison isn't fair. I don't expect a 20mm to be as good as a 28mm. Sun was from over my right shoulder. The Minolta was shot a little earlier with light that was more harsh. The Nikkor couldn't handle the light. So I reshot a little later when the sun shifted a little.
I need to start looking for another ultrawide , because of the lens damage this lens isn't going to work. I will do more testing when I'm able. Pics a resized and sharpened no other PP.

I hope you find what you need for that lens, or locate one in good shape. A 20mm that small and light is a joy to carry and use.

I was looking for a 20/4 a couple years ago when I stumbled across a 20/3.5 Ais. It's slightly bigger and heavier than the 20/4, but not by much. Optics aren't quite the same, but performance isn't much different, other than less flare with the 20/3.5 Ais.

I love how tiny and light it is. I can carry it anywhere; don't even notice it. I have a 20/3.5 UD that I prefer to use. However, because it weighs nearly twice as much I don't carry it as much, and most of my 20mm shots are taken with the Ais, like the following near sunset in Zion National Park.

Or, this one at Sand Hollow, Utah.

Beautiful shots. I hope to get mine fixed. I really need to get the focus lag fixed now so I can atleast use it properly. Your right I really like the size and weight. Smile
Maybe I will luck out and find a parts lens cheap.

I tried using a hood. Image is resized, contrast boost, and sharpened.I moved the shot foward to try to replicate the sun position from yesterday, were the center of the shots were blown out. They were so bad I didn't post one, but today with the hood it helped.

Very strange. Confused I thought with the scratches on the optics this shot wouldn't be possible. I used the HN3 hood. Now I'm really confused.

This was shot at f4 with minor pp.

You need to stop worrying about those scratches Wink My Nikkor 20/4 is scratched to bits, flares a touch but works nicely too:

My problem is the scratches on the center of the front element. Too many too close together.
Very bright sunlight, sun was over my left shoulder. This is shot at f8, it was alot wose at f22. Look at the center of the church over the stained glass window. I adjusted contrast and sharpened the image. I used the HN-3 hood on my Panny G1.

I guess I need to post a crop to show how much those scratches effect, IQ.
Even putting my hand up to extend the hood dosen't help. I don't consider this lens usable. The white spot is where the scratches are on the lens.

EDIT
The sun is behind me there is no direct sunlight entering the lens.
