Hi all,

I'm looking for a 28mm lens for my crop body (canon) and I'm considering a Takumar 28mm f3.5 or a Yashica ML 28 mm f2.8 . I was wondering if you guys had any other suggestions for this local length? I'm looking for something under 80-90e as I'm on a budget. If possible, can you specify the type of mount and the average price of each lens?

Thank you very much in advance

for the money vs quality i found most yashica ml primes were close to the best on my old 5d. whats also good about them is they are contax mount, like the zeiss planars and distagons, so they have fleibilty in terms of long term acquiring several top notch lenses to use on the same adapter. also, contax has some nice inexpensive film cams to use these great lenses as well. you cant go wrong woth contax mount lense!

Tamron 28 2.5 also pretty cheap, but you must get a 10€ adapter, which you can use also for other Adaptalls.

The Yashica ML 2.8/28 I had was only decent, could be my copy was a bad one.

Pentacon 2.8/28 is very good, it's very cheap too, 20-30 eu at most.

Just to caveat Ian's choice of the Pentacon, you will need to adjust the lens to make it fit a Canon EOS and reach infinity (amend the infinity focus point and possibly mess about with the mount).

Oh damn, I forgot about that, thanks for the correction!

There is another 28mm I would recommend that is also very cheap - the Tokina/Hoya 2.8/28, but as your budget is 8o-90eu you can find slightly better I think, but for 10-20eu it fetches, the Tokina/Hoya is a steal.

Why not get something like the Hoya or RMC Tokina that Ian has suggested and then spend the rest of your cash on another 3 or 4 lenses? Very Happy We'll get you addicted in no time Laughing

The Nikon 28/2.8 is very good too apparently but is at the top end of your budget.

So is 28/2.8 Hoya made by Tokina? What about other Hoya lenses? I am quite a fan of those, especially 135mm/f2.8 is super cute. I have Hoya 28/f2.8 and it's quite a fun lens. Here are my impressions of it

I second the recommendation of the Tamron 2.5/28.
Even cheaper ans still pretty good are the Vivitars 2.5/28 or 2.8/28.

Yes, all the Hoya primes are Tokinas, most of the zooms, if not all are too.

Avoid the 3.5/200 though, it's awful with terrible CA.

Most surprising cheapo for me till now is Kenlock-Mc.Tor 28mm 2.8 (M42)!

I have a Cosina 28/2.8 in M42 mount that I bought for less than £10 4 years ago to use with a EOS 350D. It is quite ok I think.

Actually there is a whole 28mm thread here: http://forum.mflenses.com/your-best-28-and-how-you-got-there-t45236,highlight,%2B28mm.html

I already have it. It has some CA, but all 200mm lenses short of Canon L's have it to some degree. Hoya is far from being awful. Pretty usable lens IMHO.

Kiron 28/2 is exactly at the top of your budget, fast and sharp. Well known I'm sure there are threads here.

Far more verstile than these f/3.5 lenses and I doubt they are sharper at F/8. Not heavy either.

Comes in many mounts, about 125USD

My copy is the worst 200mm lens I have tried, just awful.

If I wanted to save up a bit ( around 250euro), what would be my top choices? I heard Carl Zeiss Distagon 28mm f2.8 and Nikor 28mm 2.8 are stunning.

What camera do you use?

The Konica Hexanon EE 3.5/28 is stunning and only 30-50eu.

Aah, sadly Hexanon won't fit.

Distagon 2.8/28 is always a great buy, not cheap but stunning in all aspects.

M42 S-M-C Takumar 1:3.5/28 is pretty sharp with little effort. Handheld snapshot from today:

#1 400x400 crop from 4368x2912 image made by 35.8mm x 23.9mm (FF) sensor (Canon 5Dc):

#2 whole frame, reduced from 4368x2912, iso 1600, 1/50 sec

No one's mentioned the Nikkor 28/2.8 AIS. 0.2 m MFD, world-class resolution at near-to-mid distances. Only average at infinity. Can be had used for US$200-230.

That would be my vote.
