As for the background story.....

What can anybody say really? It's very sad, but at the same time you could travel the world and find much worse and much more desperate.

I reckon this image is a contest winner.

Superb capture! Very emotional and just as Moria asked - telling a story!

The "back ground" story left me more speechless than the first image.They are 2 great photos if only for the subject matter, which makes you stop and think...well it does for me.Thanks for posting.

I would have framed like #2 for the contrast.
Love contrast images to make viewer think.

"Donate money to ..." poster on a shabby ruin,
Easter advertisements in three feet of snow,
these things.

Well but the only problem is that the main subject is smaller and does not catch the eye, any ideas about that?
Maybe shooting it from the side with a wide lens, giving it the foreground - well yeah then you get DOF problems but the contrast does not need to be that sharp you just need to understand they are happy
