After 24MP A7, 36MP A7r(esolution) there will now come a new A7s with 12MP sensor and 4k video.

I suspect "s" means "speed",
12MP will produce comparably small filesizes, which should yield in massive FPS in burst mode, very interesting for sports photography.
And I suspect AF will be as ultrafast as with Sony A6000 (if not it would be quite stupid from Sony) Wink
I wonder how good high ISO performance might be... pixel density is much lower than with any other modern photocamera, maybe ISO12800 or even 25600 might get fully usable.

The camera should be an excellent new workhorse for astrophotography, sportsphotography, eventphotography, professional video and film making and more.

Not a camera for me, as long as it's not ultra cheap, as I'm rather waiting for an 54MP A9r, but still very interesting!

EDIT:
Some new facts: ISO 50-409600, extreme high dynamic range and color fidelity, improved AF (but not as fast as A6000)
Some video facts: S-Log2 gamma, 4K recording with no pixel binning (QFHD: 3840×216), professional XAVC S codec (mit 50mb/s+), 4:2:2 color sampling with external recorder, up to 120fps at 1280 x 720 pixels, ....

Video footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEA_8A9TBGM and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtbRLRhu0tg

Camera becomes interesting to me due extreme high ISO Smile
Hmm if it had a quiest sutter etc.... hmmm I might sell my A7 Smile
Can't wait to see how it looks at ISO12800 and so on.

At first I thought this is April 1 joke, but the date is April 4. Hmm... I think this would be hard to sell.

SONY has three cameras in the same body targeting three type of audiences. Interesting to know how this experiment will ultimately work out. Personally, I prefer they devote more resources to lens design instead popping out new bodies every 6 month.

The rumor that I had read and hope comes to fruition is an a7M (monochrome).

All the rumours at the moment seem to point to a camera aimed at video use.

right, 4K video is the buzzword!
my guess is that it will come paired with the new AF of the A6000. next one then should be another camera aimed for photographers with that reportedly much faster AF
I am no technical guy, but I wonder if lower resolution also 'may' mean better performance of rangefinder wideangles?

is the thought that its aimed at video mean it has no positive application for photographers? it seems to me faster AF plus incredible high iso ability might rightfully excite a bunch of still-takers, no?

Impressive how Sony succeeds in surprising again and again, this one even challendges attitudes and opinions. the A7s must be a low lights dream, the camera for e.g. video of live bands or any other indoor or night event.
this sample video is all taken with high ISOs, mostly ISO 1600 and 3200: http://www.fstopacademy.com/blog/sony-alpha-7s-first-hands-on-shooting-review/

Big-pixel-low-light! 12Mpx is good enough for me in most cases.

I don't think the new body has quiet shutter sound if it was based on the same design.
I shoot a lot in low light, concert, church - The shutter sound of a7r is like asking for trouble.

right, but this shouldn't be much of a problem for video.

I am no technical guy and I never understood why the NEX and A7 cameras, though no mirror slap, have a rel. loud shutter. E.g. the shutter of my Ricoh GXR M is much more discret, makes a pleasant, just barely audible click very much like and old rangefinder. I really appreciate this a lot when taking photos on the street and of course it is a big plus in church asf. It is a leaf shutter which also protects the sensor, no danger to get dust on the sensor when changing lens which I do a lot. Thinking about it there won't be space for that on an E mount camera, but Sony should work on the shutter sound

I am a kind of tech guy, but neither can't understand the shutter sound on nex/a7.

For the A7s, while it can capture video at 60p native pixels, why cannot use one or two of the video frame then build a photo? That should be soundless, and useful in low-light cases. Except for disco and rock concerts, all in door events need a little discretion. Too bad I can't use a7r in piano concert...

At the moment, I think 120fps in 720P is more useful than 4k. I agrees with others: we need more quiet shutter with less vibration and less lag.

PostPosted: Mon Apr 07, 2014 7:13 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Right, the quiet shutter is probably the final upgrade that I want, otherwise modern cameras are almost perfect!

PostPosted: Mon Apr 07, 2014 9:40 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Quiet shutter, auto iso minimum shutter speed setting and an EVF that is usable without having to zoom in to check focus (and is usable in bright sunshine)...then I'm sold Wink

P.s. I've sold my a7 Laughing

I can forgive almost all if the sensor is stabilized!

Just saw this on another forum. A7s indeed have silent shutter mode by running on electronic shutter. I am sure this is most welcome by a lot of photographers who wish to shoot at very low light condition.

Here is what it says:
Silent shutter mode is ideal when discretionary shooting is required; like capturing a recital or wildlife. Activating the silent shutter eliminates the use of the mechanical shutter and therefore shutter noise by utilizing an electronic shutter in its place.
(from "Additional Features" @ http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Compact-Interchangeable-Digital-Camera/dp/B00JIWXTXG/)

Not sure why this was not highlighted by Sony!
