Some people will insist you need to spend 3 grand on a fast lens to get 'jaw dropping' results.

Quite frankly, those people have more money than sense.

I took my latest purchase for a spin today in overcast poor conditions.

How about this for wide open performance at f1.2?

Cost of camera : 49ukp

Cost of lens: 99p

Feeling of satisfaction it gives: Priceless

50 quid of equipment (well, 55 as the memory card was 4.99), Leica charge more than that for a lens cap!

So go on, tell me photography is still an expensive hobby!

F1.2 for 99p what lens was that Ian?

The lens aside, what camera ?
That looks digital.

PostPosted: Wed Mar 21, 2012 5:26 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I don't know what the lens is, it's got no markings on it, I measured it as 1.2 compared to my Hexanon 1.4/50.

Camera is NEX-3. Paid 189ukp brand new with 16mm lens, sold lens for 140 so camera cost 49.

Ian, there is no need to stir that old hornets nest again.

As it is, the street shots and the portrait look excellent from this combo. The camera is your Nex-3 (I can see from the exif), what is the lens?

Of course, we shouldn't forgot that not everyone has the time or patience to hunt out the bargains that we find Wink

EDIT: Just seen the post above!

Oh, I'm not stirring any nests, sorry if I gave that impression.

Tomorrow I'll add some pictures from two more 99p lenses I bought.

My motivation is purely to rail against the notion that photography is an expensive hobby. It used to be, but digital has changed that. I appreciate not everyone has time to hunt bargains, but I do want to blow a hole in the notion you have to spend a lot of money

I really have no idea who made this lens, the only marking on it is 'Made in Japan'. I had to measure it to discover it was a 1.2/50.

Yes. 99p on ebay, 2.99 postage. People buy things based on name and as this lens has no name on it...

Well, if it is f/1.2 or not doesn't really matter. It's a very interesting lens.
Looks a bit like home-made. Curious to hear more of your experiences.

nice one, how much do you sell it to me ?

PostPosted: Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:39 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

It's not home-made, it's some kind of old video lens for a 1-inch tube. Who made It I have no idea, doesn't look like any of the Fujinons or Cosmicars I have seen. It does have markings for the focus scale but the aperture has no markings.

I'd swap it for any spare T* you might have lying around! Very Happy

How did you mount it on the Nex? What lens mount does it have?

Beautiful pics btw...

PostPosted: Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:48 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

It's C-mount. Doesn't reach infinity, I will have to remove some metal from either the adapter or lens mount.

PostPosted: Wed Mar 21, 2012 7:04 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

The only problem with cheap lenses is that they soon mount up!
But I suppose 30 lenses at £10 each is still cheaper than 1 lens at £500 or more.
And 30 times the fun (or effort) if you're that way inclined.

Well I think that's a cracking find, and that to me is what makes this such an interesting and satisfying hobby Smile

Looks like a TV lens

Just goes to show what you can achieve with a little experimentation. Smile

I agree on all three points, I think this lens is from the 70s and was intended for a 1-inch Plumbicon or Vidicon tube camera, it was probably an expensive item, certainly a world away from the cheap fast modern c-mounts.

I got lucky, really lucky, although the point of this thread wasn't to show off my good luck, it was to show that you can have fun and make nice images without spending much money.

I decided to leave the lens untouched as I don't have a lathe to turn down the mount.

Instead, I'm busily grinding metal off the C-mount to NEX adapter.

With a bit of luck, I'll be able to shoot it at infinity tomorrow, with a little more luck, we will have some sunshine too!

Do you mind posting 100% untouched crops?
I'd like to see a couple from those pics you've already posted.

Well.. Ricoh TF-900D ... Eur 1 and more free junk
Sensia 100 about 1 buck
E-6 process without frames EUR .95

The most saturated blue and red I ever seen .. priceless

(I don't know why, maybe the sensia was from a real good batch, or the sun was really sunning that day, or the plasticky lens has the Ricoh colors, or the metering is more like -0.7)

the tiny, plasticky lens, automagically stopped down like no good probably, also seems to do like 70 lp/mm, there is a slight haze like when using agfa film, possibly even less, only with a real strong loupe. I was sort of astonished.

Anyone got an old data sheet of these?
