Take a look on Nikkor lenses, if you can find any 24mm or 28mm f2.8 (20cm close focus) with scratched lenses they are dirt cheap and superb lenses , some scratch not impact lens IQ in most situation. I have incredible ugly 28mm lenses I bought them in batch and they are excellent performers. I had 24mm f2.8 AIS Nikkor and Yasahica ML 24m f2.8 too I rate Nikkor a bit higher or equal. _________________ -------------------------------

I like Nikkor best from all, I didn't count distortion, CA, corners and other properties. I just made better photos with Nikkor 24mm f2.8 AIS than with others on crop DSLR. _________________ -------------------------------

hello,
i know, the Yashinon DS-M 2.8/24mm is a very hard to find lens.
I did own the range of DS-M's from 2.8/24mm, 2.8/35mm, 1.4/50mm, 1.7/50mm, 2.8/135mm up to the 4/200mm.
This 24mm is one of my absolut favorites in this class.
Here are some links to samples in HIGH RES (5D FF) to show the superb quality of this 24. Stupid sujets, but shows the extraordinary sharpness and the color - reendering, i did like in the whole DSM Range.

The Yashinon DS-M Lenses are the first multicoated Yashica Lenses.
As far as i know, the where build with Thorium for a better refraction index. Thorium is an alpha transmitter. The quaitiy of the lenses is superb.
Most of the lenses should be old Tomioka calculations.
The Lenses are build like a tank, most of them switchable from A to M and all M42 screw mount types.
I cant give a comparison to the ML Version, the only thing i know is, that the ML Serie was produced after the DSM and Yashica did not use Thorium any longer in their producing process. So i would think, the DS-M are a little better cause of the better refraction index of Thorium in the glass-mix.
Sorry for the sharpness artefacts, but the forum software seemed to make this with HIGH RES PIC-Links.
Here is the link for my HIGH RES Collection of Yashica DSM 24mm Samples..

I did own both lenses, an EOS 5D modified Flektogon 25/4 and the Yashinon DSM 24.
On an EOS Fullframe the Yashinon is a better performer than the Flektogon.
Same sharpness in the center, but the Yashinon has much better sharpness from corner to corner.

Some were, some weren't ...
DS-M 50mm f1.2 / f1.4 / f1.7 : yes
DS-M 200mm f4 : no
and, (maybe surprisingly)
DS-M 28 f2.8 : no
this might lead to the idea that the 24mm is radiation-free, too. _________________ Visit the Yashica Information Site! |

As i wrote some posts before.. the 24mm DSM is a very good performer.
The 24mm didnt yellowing after all these years, so i think thorium is only in very small portions in the glas. But its equal, because Thorium is an Alpha Emitter.. what means, not really dangerous for human beeings, because the diffusion of alpha emitters are very short. As long as you dont breath glass dust, there would happen nothing.
Cheers

Yes but the depth of impression is only some micrometer. So the alpha emitter is not able/cant (to) percolate micrometers of the dead dermal top layer.
