I have an offer of purchasing OM-4 for $300. Personally I think it's quite a bargain and almost made up my mind. I'd just like to be sure I am making a right choice.
I've heard all OM-4-s suffer from battery drains; for example, I've read a story on a camera in which the owner had to replace batteries every 3 hours. The guy who I am dealing with says this particular camera is a newer version of OM-4 with replaced and modified electronics inside and it does not drain the battery. The question is whether you've heard of newer versions of OM-4 (it's not OM-4 Ti, mind you). |

Sounds kind of fishy to me. In all that I've read, there's no mention of
a later version of the OM-4 except for the OM-4Ti with the titanium top.
Ask him if you can use it to verify the battery life. If he's not willing to
do that, I'd suspect he's a charlatan.

In fact, it is not fishy by any means :-) I did some googling and found OM FAQ website on which it was stated:
How can I tell if I have the newer (more power efficient) OM-4T(i) circuit?
Turn the battery check on. If it shuts off by itself in 30 seconds, you have the 4T circuit (lowest drain). Otherwise you have the original (much) higher drain board (up to 7 times as high as a 4T).
The guy is very honest man, as far as I know him from a number of deals we made in the past, and said exactly the same - the beeper goes off after few dozens of seconds so it is the newer version.
Have to visit this page more often (NSFW?). |

I'm glad everything worked out for you, Lukasz. There was no mention
of updating the non-titanium models with better electronics on the sites
I was reading. All that was mentioned is OM-4 and OM-4T(i).
If you bought from him in the past, why would you doubt him, now?
Did you buy it?

I'm just being cautious, that's all. $300 is a nice little sum of money, have to say, so I'm just checking all the odds.
I am sending money tomorrow, haven't done it yet. I've just told my better half what I was going to do and she said fine. An angel, isn't she? :-) |

Not really and - just my opinion, mind you - not worth it, whatever the price is :-) |

Lukasz, congrats on your purchase! They are awesome cameras!
Attila, agree with Lukasz about Seagull, stay away!
I recently bought on ebay (nothing like an OM-4, but I'm happy):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260102065562&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=016
This is the upgrade model to the one I recently got. This has the light
meter, too.
And this rangefinder:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=280098489313&rd=1&rd=1
Not bad, and both shipped for less than $100!

UPDATE: I received it today. Damn, it looks totally great. It's all black, just with minor paint wears but nothing serious. The beeping signal goes off after 30 seconds so it's bound to be newer version.
I've checked it's multispot function - you point at the darkest and the brightest areas of the frame, press the button; the camera calculates proper exposure yielding best results i.e. where there are details in both shadows and highlights (provided, of course, the whole scene fits into film latitude which is not always the case particularly when one shoots slides but it's nonetheless totally awesome!).
Gosh, am I blissfully happy! |
