I want to get 135mm lens as my next purchase for my canon 450D and found quite a few for sale. Is the one in the link below a decent candidate? Any advise would be very much appreciated.

As Attila says, it should be fine. Especially if the price stays so low ! Although the advertiser's description is interesting - he says it has "crisp shutter action" Very Happy

Is this normal for Jupiter 11 or has someone opened it and lost the ball?

Infinite aperture adjustment between f/4 and f/22, there are no stops that the lens clicks into.

I have a Jupiter 11 (silver, M39) and the aperture set ring clicks firmly. The operation ring ofcourse don't click in. May be the seller doesn't know it is a two rings system?

I have this lens as well as the Jupiter 37A 135mm 3.5. I prefer the 37A. It can be had readily and inexpensively as well.

I actually use my Jupiter 37A more than I do my more expensive Pentacon 135mm 2.8 zebra and my CZJ 135mm 3.5. It's just so easy to use, such a consistent performer, sharp from wide open and a great portrait lens rendering skin tones wonderfully.

I have a cased Chinon 135/2.8 that I never use and in a case. Yours for a tenner and no shipping charge as you're UK.

Yes, I believe it is - I had one that was just like that.

J11A has clickless aperture, well, mine has. I'll sell you mine for a tenner.

However, I would suggest you ignore the J11A and go for either the Pentacon 2.8/135 or Zeiss Jena 3.5/135, both are better than the J11A and are very common on ebay, oodles of them. Pentacon can be had for 15-25ukp easily, Zeiss for 20-50ukp.

Takumars, Fujinons and the Schneider Tele Xenar would also be a safe bet.

perhaps you should try the lens from Martin...

There are quite a few 135mm-lenses that don't perform quite good.
Yes, the Pentacon 2.8 - esp. when MC-version - is very good too.
The Yashica, Tokina - really good perfomance too (I had them and can confirm the test results of the 1980's test from german Color Foto).

I had the Zeiss (Jena) Sonnar 3.5/135 and didn't like it's performance compared with the others - esp. with regard to the high prices they were calling for it!

When you venture into the 135mm fl world, one could close its eyes and pick any lens available and would probably find a good one 99% of the time. That focal length is very easy to make hence no much disctinction between makers, unless you buy fast 135mm such as 135/1.8 or 135/2

So togo back to your original question, the Jupiter 11A is a decent one although a bit slow at f4. Try to get an 135/2.5, Takumar M42 135/25 or Vivitar 135/2.5 are good options, but then again any 135mm would be agood choice. I should know since I used to have over 100 lenses at 135mm...now down to 50+

Personally, I like the dinky Tamron twin-tele f4.5. A solid performer and a really cute little lens Smile. A bit slow maybe, but never lets me down and can be had for very little money. The f2.8 version comes as various brands such as Soligor, but is a lot bigger and heavier.

Mine is also clickless aperture but I actually prefer it over my Tak 135mm, a good soild performer which can be had at half the price of the Tak and if you can find one with it's original hood all the better. Very Happy
