Excellent! Hard to see the differences, obviously the bokeh, bouquet, at the two apertures! Really good example of such a lens!

It can only go up in value, too! On a Pentax Q you will have a FL 1100mm F2.8!!!!

hehe, yes it's great, but what really makes this lens apart from the ED version is a ton of CA Smile luckily it's 80% fixable Wink

Don't see a "ton" of CA Smile Almost regretting selling mine (to fund the Olympus 180/2.8 Wink )

A Canon FD 200 F2.8 went for $300+ a few days ago, but auction may not be 100%?

Did you buy?

I find my nikkor AIS 180/2.8 is better than my Sonnar (and lots more compact)

Well, it should be. The AIS version has ED glass in it, so it's very sharp and has very little CA. However, I always found the OOF rendering of Nikkor ED 180/2.8 to be on a harsh side; harsher than, say, the non-ED version or the Olympus Zuiko 180/2.8. The Sonnar is particularly pleasing when stopped to f/4; wide open, it renders OOF highlights with bright edges.

yeah I figured out that CA isn't always there, the best results are obviously on a overcast day and even in harsh light it performs well (wide open), I just need to buy a lens hood, sometimes it ghost heavily making photos very pale and washed out. And I think it's not worth paying 2-3x more for an ED version

Hi Roman,

Looks like you have a nice sharp copy of this classic lens! Although, with this particular lens, it is very hard to find a copy that is not sharp!

Your comment about not feeling the ED versions are worth the extra money is interesting. I believe it was Moose Peterson who wrote that even the early versions of this lens may have had at least a front element of ED glass not announced by Nikon!

One of the many pleasures of collecting a wide arsenal of MF lenses is not having to always rely on one multipurpose lens, but to have the luxury of cherry picking exactly the right optic for the right situation. For instance, you may have a particular mid telephoto just for high contrast situations, one for shooting into the sun, one for speed, or open aperture performance, etc. Kind of like a painter picking just the right brush!

Enjoy the 180, it is truly a fine optic - with classic 5 element design.

Paul

thanks Paul, I think I'll enjoy this lens very much (enjoying it already Smile )... I just ordered a lens shade, because the original was removed (I think it was damaged)... Wink

Don't mean to hijack your post, but I thought I would post some pics I have taken with my Nikkor P Auto 180 f/2.8 in an AI mount. Overall it is in great condition. The previous owner was a little over zealous with the lens cloth, and left some minor cleaning marks in the coating on the front element (don't you hate that!), but I have never known it to affect my images.

Below is the 180 on my NEX-3, and then some sample pics. Note there is definitely some CA, but it is nothing that can't be corrected in PP. The sharpness is very nice IMHO. I think Roman's copy is a tad sharper and CA resistant. I shot these phots at f/2.8 and f/4 (can't remember which images, however). Embarassed Some of the pics have 100% blow ups following them for closer inspection.

wow, does it handle well on the NEX? it looks like attaching 600/4 to a D3x Smile
here's my 180 attached to a D300s and as you can see the lens hood is missing
maybe my copy has an ED element Wink luckily CA can be corrected with PP

and again some shots wide open

Nice shots! Are any of them 100% crops? The CA does not seem objectionable to me in any of your images. I can see it most prominently around the antennas in the last image, but there is very little (too my eyes) in the second window-blind image. The first close-up of the sneakers is really sharp! My copy has an AI mount - it must have been AI'd at some point.

The lens looks good on the D300. I find it is actually pretty easy to handle on the NEX - since you just hold the lens and forget about the camera!

Best,

Paul

these are all original photos, no 100% crop, I usually don't use 2.8 at infinity and in such harsh light, but just to show it handles CA and sharpness pretty well, IF you get the focus right Smile
