How do they perform compared one versus the other ?

Orestor/Pentacon 2.8/100 is much sharper lens. At f2.8 is overall sharper than the Jupiter at same aperture. It has much better contrast in contra-light and more accurate color rendering. Probably the best lens Meyer/Pentacon ever made. I rate it as high as CZJ Sonnar 135 or Leica Elmarit 2.8/135.

On the other side, Jupiter has it's sonnar character which I do like more and more.

But there aren't two Jupiter-9s with same color rendering and as hard is to get crappy Orestor, so easy you can get crappy Jupiter.

The Orestor is definitely more safe and more universal option.

Here you can see may review of the later Pentacon version of Orestor.

Try both, I agree with Brunner , except crappy Jupiter, I had a few of them none of them was crappy. I think if anybody found a crappy Russian or East German lens that means somebody did tampered it before. Perhaps some of them came out from factory with faulty , but I never met any.

Both are excellent lens, in fact I made one of my best portraits with J-9 even if I have tons of other well known 85mm lenses Planar, Pancolar , Biotar etc. J9 is stunning portrait lens, not so good for general purpose.
Meyer lens solve all shooting situation well from portrait too close-ups.

We did talk here from SLR lenses they are good ones, RF lenses are stunning!

I have both of them, but would rather recommend a Sankor made 105mm/ f2.5. It's half the price and at least as good as the Orestor and faster with very smooth bokeh. Wink

The J9 is quite a good lens. I must admit I rarely use mine.

I was looking to get one of those Orestor 100/f2.8 but now that you mentioned the Sankor, I might buy that one instead. Can you give a specific lens brand so I can look it up on eBay?

Is it the Spiratone 105/f2.5?

Most common as Spiratone, but also labeled as Aetna, Sankor, Seriese, Accura etc. It's a zebra lens and looks like this:

Ah cool. I recently won two Spiratone 105/f2.5 M42. The average price was $60+SH. Can't try them before another two months since I'm currently on a 2-month biz trip Sad

and about coating of this ?
is it single-coated or multi-coated ?

PostPosted: Fri Feb 11, 2011 7:47 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

I will also recommend the Sankor 105/2.5 (which can also be found labelled as 100/2.5).

The Meyer, like all modern Meyer lenses (I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong) is not multi coated. I believe it has a single coating of some sort.

All Meyers/Pentacons 2.8/100 was single-coated, but this doesn't matter. Contrast is on pair with CZJ MC Sonnar 3.5/135.

No sure what are you trying to compare here. If sharpness, these pictures don't prove anything. We need 100% crop.

one is a 135mm...the second is a 100mm...
100%...the shot taken with 135mm will be more enlarged !!!!

On two samples detail is very very smudged by process of noise reduction. Thus one hardly can see any difference.
