Got this crazy little lens a while back off Ebay. It is an SK Jsogon 40mm f/4.5 in classic kine exakta mount. I seem to remember reading somewhere this was an early wide angle lens designed with a not-so-wide 40mm focal length due to the limitations of the Exakta mount. Or any mount, really before the advent of retro-focus designs. Wasn't Angenieux one of the first optical firms to introduce a retro-focus WA?

Anyway, this diminuitive lens looks like a little jewel. It's front element is so far back in the mount, a lens hood is really unecessary. It perfroms quite well within its limitations! I believe it is a triplet, but it could be a Tessar 4-element design - I'm not sure.

The Jsogon is small, but I wouldn't call it a "pancake" lens as it is just about as tall as it is wide. I would think that a pancake lens should have a much smaller length/diameter ratio.

There was just a single post on here about this lens from 2009. Anyone else have any experience with one these?

Best,

P.

Interesting lens, apart from the front aperture ring it looks exactly like an Industar 50-2.

Wouldn't mind having one in my collection. The Isogon came out in 1951.
Captain Jack has one in his collection.

Really cool lens thanks for sharing.

Probably just a coincidence but they sure do look similar:

Forgot to mention it's a 4/4 design.
A little more info.

Thanks Walter, I would have pegged it as pre-war! I wonder what your other Exakta WA options were in '51? I think that still pre-dates many retro-focus WA's.

I have seen (and drooled over) Cap'n Jack's magnificent Exakta collection. I somehow missed the Jsogon! I'll go check it out again. Thanks for the tip!

Best,

Ian,

Thanks for sharing the pic. They do look similar! Of course, we all know that the Soviet photo industry got a good shot in the arm from all the booty and "guest laborers" the Red Army brought back home after WWII. Maybe this was one of the spoils of war! (the lens does date from about 6 years after the end of the war, but maybe the plans had been hanging around for a while!)

Best,

Paul

Great site, Walter. Thanks! The Jsogon shown there has a slightly different barrel and different knurling. Mine looks like Cap'n Jack's.
