it's good enough
on my lens i had to clean glass elements (as i described in following thread) but glass isnt' 100% clean

Hi Wolverine,

Do you still have this lens, and do you still rate it highly?

I can buy this lens but am wary of buying another dud lens. Funny thing is my cheapest purchases have been the best. Not sure about this one.

Please advise.

it's decent lens, but you can get better lenses in this zoom range

I want a long lens. I was thinking something cheap to tie me over but I might just stump up $200 or so for decent old Nikkor prime or CZJ Sonnar.

There are many more than decent 200/4 that can be had for under or around $100 (Jupiter 21M and super/smc takumar for example) and, if 135 is long enough, the options become many more.

I'm shooting with a Nikon so I'm limited to some extent.

If I had a NEX then there would be no problem. For now money and lack of equipment are holding me back. I'll be patient and try to save money for a decent prime. Need a second camera as a back up so that will be a NEX - again in time.

It's a very cheap lens. You can get some in very good condition for around $10-15.

I had one, and found it was reasonably sharp - especially stopped down. But my Konica UC Hexanon 70-200mm F4 ($79) is both sharper and has much better tonality/colour rendition. Although tad soft at the long end wide-open.

What the Tokina is great for is quick focusing. The push-pull system was perfectly damped and less likely to have zoom creep than all the manual Nikons I've ever tried. I found it a wonderful lens for shooting birds, butterflies and macro (using tubes).

I also have a Nikon 100-300 AIS 5.6 I use for birding - you can get those for about $60 from keh.com - or perhaps less on Ebay. Nicely sharp with very long range if you don't mind the small aperture. But a bit bulky.

try getting vivitars. i have 2 cheap vivitar zooms (along series 1 zooms i have) that i think are better than this tokina

Well I agree there are better zooms than the Tokina RMC 80-200mm/4....and think the Tamron 46a or 103a are better, but I'm not saying the Tamrons are better than the Vivitars (mentioned above) as I don't own them

Number 4 is very nice.

These lenses are not cheap. One of the zooms I have been researching and coveting but it's too expensive. It commands a higher price than old Nikkor zooms and even those in good condition can get pricey.

you've probably mistaken this lens for at-x f2.8 lens. this is f4 rmc, it goes for 30-40$

Yup, i was mistaken, it is the f2.8 I was thinking of. Attila put up some very impressive samples and I still think of this lens and the images produced.

This ebay listing is selling it as PK mount but in the pictures it is clearly C/Y

But it also doesn't look very good inside, like something is missing broken. Any ideas? It doesn't look like my RMC Tokina 50-200mm 3.5-4.5 which has a grooved ring
inside where you see some kind of bent flanges here.

Another one is on it's way from eBay for just €5 (just the darn shipping that made it 21 :p). It is supposed to have some fungus, but I'm not really afraid of that if the lens is functional. I was just a bit surprised to see the wrong description or pictures with this lens from a seller with a 100% rating en over 20000 feedback scores. I did find another interesting photographic item in his store though Razz

It is a bit soft wide open. Maybe due to the contamination but stopped down sharpness improves by bounds and leaps.
