I haven't developed film in 15 years before I picked it back up a month ago. So this question may be just inexperience. I got a one-gallon bag of Dektol and mixed it per the instructions. As soon as the Dektol touched the water, it turned brown. Is that supposed to happen? The D-76 stays clear. 24 hours later and the developer looks like moderately steeped tea.

There's only one way to find out! Smile

I remember using a brown developer many many years ago. I don't remember its name, it wasn't Dektol I think, and I'd bet it's way out of production now, but I don't remember ever having to trash any film with it.

Oh, and wear rubber gloves if you don't want stained as well as stinky fingers! Smile
