Mounted on tripod, focus on close flowers, all shot @ f4.0

1. Vivitar (Kiron) 28/2.5

2. Vivitar (Bauer) 28/2.8

3. Sears 28/2.8

The Sears is a junker, the other two take your pick.

Maybe an element not aligned right in that Sears?

The other two, the sharpness is close but the colour renditions are very different, the Bauer is very warm, it also seems to have less contrast.

Those qualities of warmth and lower contrast could perhaps be put to good use in some situations.

But the Kiron seems to be the best overall imho.

Which is good news, 'cause of the three, that's the one I own! Very Happy

I have the Kiron, also, in M42. It's a fantastic lens though it does make everything a bit cooler than other 28mms.

I am pretty sure , Sears has a faulty from this short distance any lens produce acceptable images.

Ian & Attila, it seems it is me @ fault. The Sears lens is a Canon FD mount that requires one to turn a ring permitting the lens to stop down to where it is set, otherwise it is held wide open. When I reviewed the EXIF data I see the shutter speed was way higher with the Sears than the other two with Minolta mounts. I have now concluded the Sears lens was shot wide open. Embarassed

I really do not like the FL/FD Canon mounts for this very reason.

I will try & redo this test again in the near future with different subject matter & post in this thread.

Ron, kicking his own butt.

I think Kino Precision takes this one home. It looks the better balanced lens.

Gladly accepting donations and giving a good home to all Canon FL/FD mount equipment!

On the serious side... Is the Sears a Tokina made lens or one of the later macro focusing or Korean made items.

The Kino made Vivitar seems to have earned a good reputation. I have yet to score a copy for my own use.

The only lens I've tried so far that isn't as good as I think it should be is a Korean made Carenar 35.2,8. It behaves as though it has a de-centered element.

Bill, it is Sears model #202, 1:4 macro made in Korea.

Took these in the front yard this morning. Used tripod & f8, focus on near tree 6' (2m) away.

Viv/Kiron 28/2.5

Viv/Bauer 28/2.8

Sears 28/2.8

The Sears still comes in @ third place in my opinion.
