Seriously though, I just discovered this thread and was impressed by so many photos! Some very nice images here!

For some of these with such a strong 3d effect fro a single image, just imagine how much those would appear to jump out if those we're shot stereoscopically!

I don't have any good examples to post but the Olympus Zuiko OM 35-80/2.8 has very nice pop and 3D. Top notch macro/micro contrast combined with brilliant color reproduction. And very nice bokeh. Very expensive but very, very nice.

I still want to learn how to to achieve this more frequently. Lens seems to be important, but not the only important part. Some great examples (not mine!) with Pentax lenses:

Once I also find a great pic of an old man sitting on the a street taken with a common Pentax-A 50mm F2 lens and Canon 5D. The 3d pop was remarkable! So it seems that it is not a myth, but more like good technique.

Some lenses create pop more than others and maybe some focal lengths. My observations have been that the lens needs to be fast, even if only relative to the focal length. What is more important is the scene and subject within the scene. The subject must be completely in good focus and everything around it blurred, but it doesn't have to be blown out. When you have a picture of someone or something that has areas that transition to out of focus, it will ruin any chance of a good pop. The eye must see a sharp and sudden transition to out of focus.

I have a few lenses that seem more capable than others to provide for good pop. One such lens is the Vivitar Series 1 2.3/135 which is very sharp from wide open. Sonicscott has created some very good pop from his use of the lens in our Brids-in-Flight thread in the Digital forum. Here is one simple image from mine...



This lens in combination with full frame is very good for pop.

Some lenses do it better with some colours.
I have a Vivitar (Kobori) 28-200 which loves to pop reds and blacks.

I recently acquired a CZJ Prakticar 300/4 Sonnar. Typical juicy Zeiss color pop. Gives nice separation of subject from BG, unless I make a mistake.
