ZUFAR 4/350mm APO CAT lens

Was waiting over 10 years for such a lens to appear...

Was made for the Soviet MARS-5 mission to planet Mars using a very elaborate camera



with a 4/350mm catadioptric quartz fluorite lens [lens drawing made exclusively for me by my dear friend Marco Cavina]:



which delivered very sharp images of the Mars surface:



And here is the lens:



It was made of Quartz and Fluorite to be able to work in UV and visible light, 300-700nm without focus shift.
so actually it is an APO 350mm catadioptric lens. Their whole useful wavelength range is 230-700nm.

Thank you Dan, Guess only a handful were ever made.
Will have to make a suitable mount with my mechanic
once it is in my hands, than we'll see how it delivers...

Obviously not THE lens that went to Mars!

Congratulations! Sounds like a very useful lens for your work. Kind of narrow DOF however. Looking forward to seeing results.

Thanks guys! I intend to use it for my multispectral work, especially also to simulated bird vision.
And the lens drawings were especially made for and donated to me by my dear friend Marco Cavina,
so I own all rights... Smile

shouldn't the serial number be like "000005" instead of "370807"?

That serial number is a mistery to me as it contradicts any known numbering
scheme used in the former USSR! The Mars missions using that lens/camera
were done 1971-76, so that lens should be from that time...

Possibly they used a special numbering schemes for projects, as NASA also has done.

Most of the GOI prototypes I met don't use this 0000 numbering also. Since Volosov lead the conception of this set of lens, and since Volosov was working at GOI, I guess the GOI was behind the conception, so it's not that surprising to find such number.

Impressive bokey for a cata lens! Congrats ... where are the donuts?

The donuts come from specular highlights in OOF areas, without the highlights the bokeh just looks busy.
Looks like it's very sharp, should be a very useful tool.
I wonder how much magnification this lens is capable of while remaining sharp? I've never seen any macro shots from a Cat. now that I think of it.

Yes, they are there, just not in my images I have showed.

Indeed, it seems to be a very sharp lens and yes, those lenses also work very well as "long distance microscopes", there have been very special ones, the Questar QM 100 comes to mind for instance http://www.company7.com/questar/microscope/qm100.html , here some docu about its capabilities: http://www.company7.com/library/questar/QM_100_30003c7.pdf
