hi all

i find myself in many situations where a zoom in the 28-135mm range would be very useful. ive come across these two that i think are reasonably priced, but do not know very much about their comparative performance. can anyone provide me their thoughts on how these lenses perform and which would offer best IQ?
thanks
tony

thanks guys! i will probably make the decision today to pass on the kiron unless i get some more feedback. i have the kiron 28-85 which i think is good but not great, so i might just try the sp for the extra FL unless i hear otherwise from members...

I have and use the Tamron SP 24-135AF (auto-focus) lens and the Kiron 28-105 lens. As for image quality, I don't really know. Both of them deliver superb results. On my auto-focus bodies, I use the Tamron SP 24-135AF and Tamron SP 20-40AF almost exclusively. When going with a manual focus lens, I usually grab my Vivitar Series 1 28-90 over any other manual focus lens. But, I do prefer the Kiron 28-105 over the excellent Kiron 28-85.

If you prefer an auto-focus lens, you'll be very pleased with the Tamron SP 24-135 lens. However, if you prefer a manual focus lens, the Vivitar Series 1, 28-90 or Kiron 28-105, will deliver professional caliber results. Personally, the majority of my published snaps have been made with the Vivitar Series 1 28-90 glass. But, as of late, my Tamron SP 24-135 and Tamron SP 20-40 have been the workhorses in my arsenal...

You can't go wrong with any of the above mentioned lenses.

I prefer the Vivitar Series 1 28-90 over the Kiron 28-85. However, the the Kiron 28-85 delivers the goods!

thanks! it appears no one has any experience with the tamron sp 28-135mm, which is unusualy for this forum, and so gives me some pause. while the 24-135 seems to get nice reviews here, its mot really what im looking for as i want an adaptall or m42 or c/y lens usable on a variey of cameras. i really would love to have someone comment specifically on the 28-135mm if theres anybody out there w some experience!

Try these groups. I've never heard of an Tamron "SP" 28-135 lens.

This is not my blog, but it is my former lens Laughing

I've never owned the Kiron so impressions would be one-sided. The Tamron performs pretty nicely (keeping in mind the era in which it was made wasn't known for fantastic zoom lenses) but it's huge and heavy as a trade-off for f/4 speed and really nice focal range.

It is still a metal SP, however. That alone is an indicator of the build and image quality. I'm sure you're well aware of the 80s SP lenses...no real duds (except the Adaptall mounts themselves...).

It's a bit sad as the horse is going (or is) blind in it's right eye Sad
