I have a few "simple" 400mm and 500mm lenses, and usually I assumed them to be [3/2] constructions: A achromatic dublet as the "main lens", and a slightly negative sinle lens acting as tele / field flattener. It seems that in some cases a more complex construction was used.
Thanks for sharing the image!

the rear element is also a doublet (look closely) so 5 e/3g.
The common generic 400mm f6.3's are normally two cemented achromats so 4e/2g. The vivitar 400mm varied quite a bit. This panagor is similar to the komine made viv wich is also a 5e design. Pretty good lens IMO - i have one. _________________ pentax ME super (retired)

Seriously, was this made in one go or did it require reassembly? |
As far as I know, producing these "cut lenses" is an art in itself. Not just cutting an entire lens! _________________ www.artaphot.ch |

Many years ago I saw an entire Challenger Mk1 tank that had been cut in half like that, apparently they did it with a laser and it took a very long time. It was at the Royal Ordnance Factory in Leeds, not on public display. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

The lens that started this topic is still on ebay. A second pic shows the lens diagram more clearly. Both the rear and middle element are doublets. The front is single. So it is a 5/3 design.
