I'm now after a good 85mm M42 fitting prime to add to my small collection and was wondering what i should look out for. I have about £100-£130 to spend.

Recommendations please Smile

Cheaper 85mm lens is the Jupiter-9 85/2, or for your budget, you can grab a Takumar 85/1.9 (I prefer Auto Tak 85/1.9 with its 9 blades diaphragm, but it is scarce), they allow to take beautiful portraits, exemple with the :

- Super Takumar 85/1.9 :

- Auto Takumar 85/1.8

Super Takumar 85/1.9

S-M-C Takumar 85/1.8

Super Takumar 85/1.9

Super Takumnar 85/1.9

S-M-C Takumar 85/1.8 With a very dirty star filter, which is so dirty it acts like a softener too. Wink

...and not to forget the SMC 1.8/85mm and the famous Pancolar 1.8/85mm

I didn't mention them, because they are out of Andy's budget Wink There is also the Helios 85/1.5, but out of budget too, maybe the H40 in M39 mount, but it requires an adapter Confused

Well, depends on in what timespan he needs it. If he is patient, he will get a SMC I have had two 1.8 takumars did not pay over 90£ for any of them. They show up now and then.

I know that waiting often means we'll be able to find a great price, but if we think like this, we can advice any lens we want Laughing

Thanks for the great replies. I'm a BIG fan of the Takumars and i can wait. I would love a Super Takumar 85mm f1.8, that would be perfect i think. i'll look at others too. Jupiter-9's come up regularly but are they as good as the Tak?

How about the Tamron 90mm? Just about as sharp as it gets from F4 on and good bokeh and contrast. And you can get adapters to fit many cameras.

The Jupiter is popular and would be about £40-50.

Where are you guys finding these cheaper Takumars? Luck and pawn shops/flea markets?

A quick eBay search turns up lenses in the $350+ USD Range. That's around 215+ GBP right (so says google)?

Wait and monitor continuously Ebay and forums if you want to get them cheaper.

I know bargains are out there. PeterQD picked up a Flek for almost loose change, but these are rare.

The going rate here for a 1.8/85 Tak is 200+GBP. When someone is new to MFLenses they usually want to buy the lens ASAP, therefore I think it may be unlikely to do a seach on the auction sites and turn up one for his budget.

In the risk of giving away our secrets, have a look at auction sites for cameras rather than lenses as they may be badly listed and have a gem attached to them. Prakticas & Zenits are good places to start searching.

I take it that's your better half in the pics?

If so, is she aware of the subjects that she's been placed amongst?

I agree with this 100%.

Canon XS (1000D), Tamron 90/2.5, f/8, ISO 400. No pp other than size reduction of the first image and conversion to jpg.
