I've had a Nikon TC-301 for a while. I originally picked it up to use with a couple 300mm Nikkors I had, but I never liked the results--sharpness suffered and CA was worse. Nikon recommends the TC-301 to be used with the MF Micro-Nikkor 200/4 Ais for 1:1 macro, but the resulting viewfinder image when used for macro is just too dark.
I decided to try the Micro 200/4 and TC-301 as a 400mm telephoto at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
The viewfinder is still dark (after all, the combination is a 400/8 ), but in full sunlight, it's good enough to focus and compose an image.
Below is a shot of a couple giraffes, unedited (except for size reduction), unenhanced, and uncropped. While not as good as a truly good 400mm lens, it's not bad at all, and it weighs a fraction of what my Tokina AT-X 150-500/5.6. I can certainly make do with this until I can find an affordable 400 or 500.

That's why it came as such a surprise to me. I've used 2x teleconverters in the past--including this one--and I've never been impressed before. I know it works terrible with Nikkor 300/4.5 H (pre-Ai) and 300/4.5 Ais ED-IF lenses, which was the reason I picked it up in the first place. Clearly, it works quite well with this lens. |

That's a great result! I've never used the TC301 but have the TC200 and TC201. The TC200 works pretty well with the Nikkor 300mm f4.5 ED-IF but also surprisingly well with the Soligor T4 400mm:

Both of your shots look very good, but I was surprised by the first one. I've tried the TC-301 with my 300/4.5 Ais IF-ED, but I never liked the result. On the other hand, I have a TC-201 that I've never tried with the the 300 IF-ED. Looks like I'll have to give it a shot or ten on a nice, bright day.
Thanks for linking to your pix. I never would have thought to try the TC-201 since I didn't like the result with the TC-301, especially since the 301 is supposed to have been designed to work with long Nikkors that have recessed rear elements. |
