Now that is interesting.
Wide open I assume.
Did you rotate the focus ring a little during the image? I am intrigued by the effect that you have produced here.
OH

No, I didn't rotate the focus ring during the exposure, good guess though.

Here's another one at f/4 with a shutter speed of 1/200, direct from my camera, no post processing:

If this is at f/4 than you probably used some extension rings or bellows or tampered with the glass Wink as the DOF is quite narrow.
What's more my Helios is sharp wide open and at f/4 is razor sharp while yours looks really soft, so you must've done something Wink.

No extension rings or bellows...

but...you guessed it. I tampered with the glass to produce this effect.

Yeay! What I have won then? Very Happy

I must admit this is really interesting result of DIY, however I will not sacrifice my copies of Helios for that Smile.

Looks like the results from Jason Bognacki's "Petzval mod" to the Helios. I imagine you did something like that?

That was actually what inspired me to start tinkering around because I wanted to find out if I could reproduce that.

As far as I know he never revealed anywhere how he did it.
But now I know the secret too. Twisted Evil

Is the lens hand held/supported in front of the camera and not mounted on the body as such?
OH

I got a similar effect to that when I fell arse over head down an embankment Smile

No it was mounted to the camera as it would be normally.

I also tampered with a Sears 55mm f/1.8 and a Cyclop-1M 85mm f/1.2 (w/Helios 44 rear elements) Wink

I shot some quick video clips with all three lenses today showing what these effects look like in real time.

Don't suppose you'll be revealing the secret any time soon?

I've just been teasing so far.

Seems like it would be too selfish if I did not explain what I did at some point for those who are interested.

Here's some clues:
    * It's not very difficult or time consuming to do
    * All the parts you need are already inside the lens
    * The modification is not permanent and is completely reversable!

I also found some interesting results doing this with a Yashinon 55mm f/1.8 as seen here.

So which element did you reverse?

And how difficult is disassembly/reassembly of the lens?

What camera did you shoot your test videos with? Full frame?

PostPosted: Tue Oct 29, 2013 3:24 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

For the Helios 44-2, just reversing the front element will produce that effect. It's easy to access the glass from the front removing the retaining ring using a spanner. I don't have one, so I used two very small flat-head screwdrivers at the same time to unscrew it.

For other lenses I flipped around both of the front two elements and sometimes swapped positions at the same time depending on how the lens was constructed and how easily and securely it can be put back together.

The camera I shot the video with is a Canon 600D (t3i)

Guys,

could ye do some of us a favour? We don't all have W I D E S C R E E N . Please resize tae the recommended limits. Losing half the dialogue on a thread which interests me; there are some fine photos here but can only see truncated versions.... thanks. Cool

Some helios 44-2 (2=m42) pictures on Sony A7. No PP, I'm getting the 44 m39 too, love this lens. Have a damaged 44m-4. Lovely lenses for no money at all.
