Very nice pics here!
The Helios 44 is a real instrument for art.
Am I the only one loving the flares of these lenses?
This is the 44-2 wide open:

Wow, how could I have missed this thread? I might as well add to it. I own a Helios 44M, a 58mm f/2. Really, I've only taken a few self-portraits with it mounted to my EOS DSLR. I don't use 50s much on that camera.
My Helios is contrasty and sharp. I like it.

Now that is interesting.
Wide open I assume.
Did you rotate the focus ring a little during the image? I am intrigued by the effect that you have produced here.

No, I didn't rotate the focus ring during the exposure, good guess though.
Here's another one at f/4 with a shutter speed of 1/200, direct from my camera, no post processing:

If this is at f/4 than you probably used some extension rings or bellows or tampered with the glass as the DOF is quite narrow.
What's more my Helios is sharp wide open and at f/4 is razor sharp while yours looks really soft, so you must've done something . _________________ Mateusz

No extension rings or bellows...
but...you guessed it. I tampered with the glass to produce this effect. |

I must admit this is really interesting result of DIY, however I will not sacrifice my copies of Helios for that .

That was actually what inspired me to start tinkering around because I wanted to find out if I could reproduce that.
link to Bognacki's "Petzval mod" video
As far as I know he never revealed anywhere how he did it.
But now I know the secret too. |
