I know everyone will have / need / want different parameters but for starters :

1. Under 30mm
2. 30mm to 50mm
3. 50mm to 70mm
4. 70mm to 105mm
5. 125mm to 135mm
6. 150mm to 200mm
7. Over 200mm

I have just started with MF lenses (on a K7) and have been delighted with the results I've obtained from some of them. This is my kit so far but I'd like to know what you have / think so I know what to look out for, upgrade to, in future !

1. 24mm Vivitar F2.8
2. Slot empty ! (I have the 43mm Ltd so guess I might not need anything here) ?
3. SMC Takumar 50/1.4
4. Slot Empty - Need something to compete with Tamron Di 90 macro for sharpness ?
5. CZJ Electric Sonnar 135/3.5
6. Slot Empty !
7. SMC Takumar 300/4

Just one per category please - thanks for your list !

Kevin

A 2.0 90mm macro - is that 1:1 ? Now THAT extra light would come in very handy !

No, it's a 1:2.

But with the Auto Extension Tube 65-116 1.72X is reachable.

It may depending on what camera you have. Most DSLRs don't see brighter than F2.8 in my experience and some only to F4.

That's a very interesting comment Martin. Could you explain that please ?

I notice a big difference using my Tak 1.4 when the evening closes in.

1. Under 30mm : Vivitar 24/2
2. 30mm to 50mm : S-M-C Takumar 35/2 (do want : Distagon 35/1.4)
3. 50mm to 70mm : Porst 55/1.2 (do want : Pentax 50/1.2, because of its smoother bokeh)
4. 70mm to 105mm : Helios-40 (for its bokeh), or Takumar 85/1.9 (smoother bokeh), or S-M-C Takumar 85/1.8 (razor sharp), there is no one I use more often than others
5. 125mm to 135mm : S-M-C Takumar 135/2.5 V2
6. 150mm to 200mm : SMC Pentax K 200/2.5
7. Over 200mm : S-M-C Takumar 400/4

I hear you wise man Cool

Ok, i made an error in byuing too many lenses, and not using them. By now i focus on the essential, which is lens rendition, contrast etc. My favs so far are :

50mm Planar and Minolta MD 1.4. Most used. The second lens most used is the Sonnar 85mm 2.8.

so 3 lenses do make my day so far

Collected over time and with some care, it's not too bad. None of the Leicas have set me back more than €450 (except the 100mm APO), the Zeiss and Nikkors where purchased 2nd hand (although they look new) and the Voigtländers are fairly inexpensive Smile

I realise that we're asked for only one of each focal-length range, but it's extremely difficult in some cases Embarassed

1. Under 30mm - Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28
2. 30mm to 50mm - Carl Zeiss Distagon 1.4/35
3. 50mm to 70mm - Carl Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 or Carl Zeiss Ultron 1.8/50
4. 70mm to 105mm - Carl Zeiss Planar 1.4/85 or Helios-40-2 1.5/85
5. 125mm to 135mm - Carl Zeiss Sonnar 2.8/135 or AOC Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 2.5/135
6. 150mm to 200mm - Carl Zeiss Sonnar 2.8/180 or AOC Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 4/150

I can't name a wide-to-tele camera bag with only MF lenses and call it perfect. Why? Seen from a Nikon system user's perspective, especially at the widest end (14 to 28mm) and at the narrowest end 200mm and longer there are AF lenses superior to MF design available. They come with a premium price of course, but so do many Zeiss ZF manual focus lenses as well (and some highly coveted discontinued mf lenses also...)

Sorry for not complying with the topic standard, I just don't want to look at building my lens bag with priority either being always prefer manual focus or always prefer auto focus. Lots of my favorite lenses already mentioned here, it is no secret that I'd like a whole bag of Zeiss ZF but their lens line is still not superior nor complete, although very very high in average quality for sure.

I'm not going to give a list Kevin, because it's like buying cars - one man's meat is another man's poison. You've got plenty of other ideas anyway! Smile

I feel with your K-7 and its APS-C sensor, you are a bit light at the wide end. The 43 Ltd is a great lens but I think you'll definitely be needing a 35 and maybe a 28 too. And sometime in the future you might looking for an ultra-wide (20mm or less) too.

PostPosted: Tue Jun 08, 2010 12:05 am    Post subject: Re: The Perfect Set of MF Lenses Reply with quote

My own perversions:

1. Under 30mm: Zenitar 16/2.8; Lentar-Tokina 21/3.8; Vivitar-Kiron 24/2; Pentax SMC-M 28/2.8
2. 30mm to 50mm: Isco Westron 35/2.8; Pentax Super-Takumar 35/3.5
3. 50mm to 70mm: Pentax Macro-Takumar 50/4, Super-Takumar 55/1.8; Meyer Oreston 50/1.8; Helios-44 58/2
4. 70mm to 105mm: Nikkor 85/2; Vivitar-Komine 90/2.8 macro; Meyer Trioplan 100/2.8
5. 125mm to 135mm: Pentax Takumar 135/2.5; Jupiter-11 135/4
6. 150mm to 200mm: Meyer Telemegor 180/5.5; Pentax Super-Takumar 200/4, Tele-Takumar 200/5.6
7. Over 200mm: Enna Tele-Ennalyt 240/4.5; Alpa-Chinon 300/5.6; Sakar 500/8 mirror

One entry per slot is impossible. The slots are too large. Those in boldface may be my picks.

Post arrived and I just opened the package where was the newest for my collection => Carl Zeiss Jena Flegtogon 4/20 (Zebra). Very Happy

I needed one wider and this review caused this purchase
http://www.mflenses.com/carl-zeiss-jena-flektogon-20mm-f4-lens-review.html
(...so I going to blame you Orio if I'm not satisfied.. Wink Very Happy Very Happy )

So my opinions from 1-5 you can find from my signature and I'm very pleased them all (4/20 not tested yet Smile ). For my personal photographing purposes and with my 7D I don't need more tele than 135mm so I really don't know anything about those longer ones (6-7).

Thanks for the tip Peter. I do have the 24mm Vivitar which I have to say I haven't used much in the month since I bought it but it seems like a nice lense. I also have a Sigma 10-20 which is an awesome lens (though not MF of course) and usually does me when I want wide.

2. 30mm to 50mm: Leica Summicron 2/35 & Steinheil Quinaron 2.8/35
