Hi all,

I like taking night landscape pictures, for night landscapes I need to use the lens wide open. I currently have a Canon 28mm F2.8 that behaves ok at F2.8.

I wonder if you know about a prime that will be better than my Canon at F2.8 or even a wider aperture.

My camera is a 5DII.

Thanks for all the recomendations you may give me!

Luis

Ty, the few reports/reviews I've read about the CZJ 20 2.8 said it was soft wide open and excellent from F8. I'd like a lens that is better wide open than the Canon 28 F2.8 and this may not be the case?

why don't you use a tripod for night landscape?
also the light sources get nicer closed down

Now I read many things about Nikon glass. What about Nikkor 28/2 ai lens? They say that it is one of the more sharp glass even wide open. Then there are Nikkor 24/2 ai but those lenses are not cheap , too.

Maybe it is some special prupose pohotgraphy. My recomendation would be also use a tripod as I do.

CZJ 20 2.8 is not soft wide open, its much sharper than 24-70L

I've just bought the CZJ Flektogon 20/2.8, It hasn't arrived yet.
I got it at at pretty good price so I couldn't resist. Smile

A few weeks ago I bought the Zeiss Distagon 18/4 to use with my 5D for landscape shots. My mirror is yet to be shaved so I haven't really tried it yet.

Of course I use a tripod. But if you shot starscapes you need to maximize light capture without producing star trails. With a 20mm for example the longest exposure time I can use is about 30 seconds, 30 seconds at F2.8 is twice as bright as 30 seconds at F4. That's why sharpness wide open matters a lot to me.

Any input about the Nikkor AF 24mm F2.8 ? Is it sharper than the Canon 28mm at F2.8, similar or worst?

Ty and keep the ideas coming!

Nikor AI 3.5/20mm.. for me the best wide open.

Some time ago i did a test for myself to answer exactly that question...

candidats (from l to r)..

1. Canon EF 2.8/20-35L
2. CZJ Flektogon 2.8/20mm
3. Nikon Nikkor 3.5/20mm AI
4. CZJ Flektogon 4/25mm
5. Yashinon DS-M 2.8/24mm

My favourite was the Nikor AI 3.5/20mm. Good sharpness wide open, nearly no flare if you shot against sun.. perfect.

Short Sample... on my old EOS 5D...

Not everytime the faster lens is better lens.. as you can see. This small little lens outperforms the rest..

Cheers
Henry
