Today I had couple of hours of "no-rain time" and I took my first shots with the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Ai-S version.
I mounted it on the Canon 1DmarkIII.
It's the first time I see a sort of 3D effect on my shots .. I thought it was a "specimen" of Zs lenses, so I'm surprised to find a similar flavour here.

These are couple of examples of what I mean, both shot at f/8:

Sharpness and resolution are great too.
For pixel peepers, this is a 100% crop of above boat:

Colors are faithfully and well saturated

I couldn't check CA because there was no strong sun light (yes, rain had stopped but sky was still mainly cloudy).

As last thing, I checked bokeh both with very close subject, and both with mid distance subject.
Both have been shot wide open:

That looks like a fine lens in very good hands. I like the old patina of the boat, that 100% crop is awesome.

Great series, this is my favorite

This is overall a very high quality lens, one of (if not the) best of Nikkor 50mm lenses (I have or have had almost every Nikkor 50mm version ever made). The only thing I find disappointing is performance wide open, which is quite modest in detail and accompanied by about one full f-stop of vignetting (which of course can be removed).

On the strong sides I find the bokeh and dimensionality in images, just as you have noticed by now. Center detail is very very good already at f/2 and I've made 60x90cm prints from f/5.6-f/8 exposures which show corners as sharp as center. Once you are able to do CA tests you will notice that this lens has surprisingly little of it, for being an f/1.4 lens.

I am with Vilhelm. Wonderful shot. 3D very evident.

Thanks to everyone for positive comments Smile

I just want to share another couple of shot; working on saturday's photos I noticed another interesting feature of this lense.

Closing 2 or 3 stops, the bokeh changes character (of course) but still is interesting, even if quite different from TA.
Comparing the same violets' shot at f/1.4 in previous sample, here is the same shot at F/4:

The background still keeps soft borders while becoming more defined .. so it's possible to choose which effect to give at the "painting" Very Happy

The second shot I want to share is nothing special by itself, but it's interesting how well rendered is the "oily" sensation that a strong water stream gives under an ugly light (I think everyone has been close to a river after long rain knows what I'm talking about Confused ).
I think it is due to the strong details that the lense was able to catch inside water's reflections:

Next lens to test is the Nikkor Ai 135 f/2.8 that came together with the 50mm .. it's quite rare on Internet so I'm curious to see how it performs Wink
