What other lens to get?

I just got done with finals and life at work is pretty chill (after the horrible holiday planning rush). So i was thinking of getting a lens or 2 to play with.

on the NEX these are the lens I have.

16mm: sony 2.8
20mm: vivitar 3.8
28mm: hexanon 3.5, minolta 3.5
35mm: hexanon 2.8
40mm: hexanon 1.8
50mm: Pentax Takumar 1.4, Hexanon 1.7
55mm: Mamiya Sekor 1.4
135mm: Hexanon 3.2
200mm: Minolta 3.5
300mm: Vivitar 5.5

I'm missing a few FL such as the 24, the 85, the 100, and 105 (and a bunch other ones)
any cheap lens in those missing FL? I saw a canon 135 3.5 for 15 bucks and a canon 135 2.5 for 50, not sure if i should get them, I don't have canon adapter so I would have to go out and get one.

are you sure you need lens in every focal length that is/was on the market? why not buying zoom then? I think it would be better to buy few lenses which are better than bunch of cheap ones

hmm, between a 55 and a 135, there is a gap big enough to justify an 85, no doubt. Thomas

I'm pretty sure at this point I don't "need" any lens, it's just more collecting for me.

I have the zooms cover on my alpha system (quite a few zoom there too).

at 58/57 I might spring for the konica 1.4 or the minolta 1.4... those are easier to get than the helios (for some reason i can't find a good source for russian lens in the US).

i was thinking something a long the line of 85, 100, and 105... we'll see what pops up.

Oh and just about everyone here has more than one lens of each focal length. It goes with t he territory Laughing Laughing Laughing And what's this `need' thing I keep hearing? Rolling Eyes

What about the Jupiter 9 85/2? It would be a nice Russian lens AND it would fit in one of your focal length gaps Wink

With that list of lenses, there is little you still need imho. The Jupiter-9 2/85 is a good suggestion, a very good lens indeed and you have to spend a lot more money to find a better 85mm.

I'd caution against buying more lenses than you need, I did that and deeply regret it, now I'm in the unpleasant phase of trying to sell most of them and just narrow it down to an essential set similar to what you have.

In case of you I sell 16mm SONY Pancake and buy instead either Tamron SP 17mm or Tokina 17mm.
Sony lens is a a toy degrade your camera to a compact, I had for a while , finally I sold it.

Vivitar 20mm also better to let it to go, buy instead a Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 20mm f4 Exakta in poor condition , price will be same IQ is way better.

Vivitar 300mm should go too and buy Nikon, Minolta , Konica they are go on affordable price and IQ is lot better.

I'll keep an eye out for these things... The vivitar 20 and 300 I got together for maybe 50 bucks, not sure if anyone wants it, but you are right, the 20 has really bad IQ unless i stop it way down. the 300 I haven't had time to test, relatively hard to shoot, it's gigantic lol.

The sony 16mm, my copy is actually okay, again hard to dump because of it's reputation. It is the only AF lens I have on the NEX and i use it now and then in situation where I can't MF fast enough.

Great suggestion though, I'll make sure to go on ebay and look around for all the lens listed.

BTW, my copy of the Takumar 50 1.4 is not so hot compare to my mamiya seckor 55 1.4 and my hexanon 1.7 lol, someone claimed the hexanon 50 1.7 is one of the sharpest lens in that range, and I think they might be right... it does render very good colors too.

Yes, the Hexanon 1.7/50 is a superb lens, one of the very best 50mms around imho.

I also rate the Hexanons 3.5/28 and 3.2/135 as among the best in their focal lengths.

The Hexanons 4/21 and 2.8/21 are wonderful too but not easy to find and expensive I will never sell my 4/21, I love it. As Attila suggests, the Flektogon 20mm is the best price vs performance in this length.

I also recommend the Tokina 3.5/17, I have one and it's another lens I will never sell. There is a Vivitar badged version of it.

Why? He already has Hexanons in 28 and 35mm. I had the Kiron 2/35 and it's a good lens but the Hexanon is much better.

Go for a nice 85mm. In m42 you can get a Pentax smc takumar 85mm f1.9 or better yet, f1.8 for a few hundred.

I had the 1.9/85, good lens but I thought the Jupiter-9 was better for less than half the price so I sold the Tak.

The opposite happened to me: I had a jupiter 9, and sold it after I got the tak 1.9/85 because i liked it slightly better.

But i paid the same for both of them: if the going price for the tak is twice the one of the j9, get the j9 without any doubts.

I sold the Tak for 130ukp, my J9 cost just under 30ukp but I got it cheap, 50-60 is more common.

That's more or less how much i paid mine (around 80 €), the tak costed me €100, but it came in a bundle with a helios 44.

I never checked prices for the 85 tak, but they seem quite crazy at a first quick look on ebay.

Yes, I bought the Tak locally and thought it was a nice lens. Then I looked on ebay at how much they were selling for and immediately sold it because they were fetching 4x what I paid for it.

It should be made clear that the smc takumar 85mm f1.9 and the smc takumar 85mm f1.8 are two completely
different optical designs and the f1.8 lens is superior in all respects and sells for about $100 more than the f1.9
version.

That's true, while the older (1960) 1.8/85 auto takumar has a 5 elements 4 groups design (which I don't know if it's the same) as the 1.9/85 super takumar/super-multi-coated takumar.

I checked and it was the 1.8 version I had. Good lens but not worth the money it fetches so I sold it.
