I did my best to pull up some flare with this shot. I have read on the
web that "flare" is one of the downfalls of the 90/3.5. I'm not seeing
it, EXCEPT perhaps flare is hidden in the sun rays? I'm not expert
enough to tell.

In any case, I think lack of flare in this image is very good.

I did bring up a heavy crop of the original size and found no trace at
all of chromatic abberations or fringing! I like that!

Not one of my better images, I just threw it onto the forum
to make a point about flare, at least in this particular image.

Again, colors are TRUE to what I saw, even down to the angry
purplish-hue of the dark clouds overhead. Very Happy

So far, I love this lens enough that it stays on the camera a LOT. Cool

Thanks for this report.

I don't remember any single person, who would be upset by Lanthar's performance. I think it proves, that these lenses are perfect investment. Price isn't low, but if one see these images... it's really worthwhile.

Thanks guys, wasn't meant to be a "beauty" shot.

I am AMAZED that the lens picked up the color of the
sky so well. Especially the spectral pink-red section to
the right of the trees.

My Pentax-A 55/2.8 lens did not show the color as true,
although I have nothing but respect for the Pentax lens
as a whole.

I don't know the mechanics of making the glass inside
the 90/3.5 lens pick up the colors so well...maybe someone
knows? Is there something different about the way they
manufacture and position the glass? Does it have anything
to do with the apochromatic scheme?

Lovely lovely mood you manage to capture with your Lanthar.

^^ the ray of light passing through the composition is as wonderful as the color!

Klaus has the test files (I deleted them) but I did two flare tests with the 90/3.5

- industrial Maglite aimed inside viewfinder - no flare
- industrial Maglite aimed at lens front but outside frame - undistinguishable effect
- industrial Maglite aimed at lens front, visible inside frame - small flare on front element.

Next, I took out the 90/3.5 and shot a bright, very low sun inside the frame, everything else was snow and ice. I shot straight into the sun and bracketed exposures. Couldn't induce more than a vague center ghost in one of the shots.

Too bad I don't have the boring samples anymore but Klaus can confirm they showed you have to deliberately compose for flare to produce any, and even then it is of a boringly small amount in the picture.

Larry, whatever this shot was meant to be, it IS a beautiful shot. The composition, the colours, the atmosphere, everything shows that you simply are a very good photographer with a deep love for nature.

poilu, this actually happens quite often, and my guess it's a combination of all the mist in the air that is present even on seemingly clear days, and the position of the sun showing the spectrum of colors. I think the mist has prismatic elements that accentuate the colors.

Jules, I'm very pleased that the lens caught those colors. It's not
very often that the true colors show so well in my images. They
are usually quite visible with the naked eye in this area.

I've repeated this before, but the 90/3.5 was a GIFT from a
forum member, and that still stuns me. Shocked

Well obviously the gift went to the right person.

Cheers

Well, I'm happy for you of course, maybe someone who saw your (at
least for me) obvious talent and wanted to support that?

Well...hey. I like that statement!

But, of course, there is a TON of wonderful talent on this forum, so maybe just about everyone should be gifted with the lens. Laughing
