Hi,

OK, here goes - following up, as promised, with some of the details of the 55/1.8 Auto-Tak issues. This is the "condensed" version, but it may still be tiresomely over-detailed...

Not over-detailed at all Jon - in fact it now means that I for one will be more careful about mounting these 'troublesome' lenses on specific bodies. It is interesting to note that Pentax actually listened to and acted upon the reports provided to them - something some of today's suppliers should consider doing!

And, thanks for putting together this impressive documentation of your experiences Wink

Hi,

Thanks very much.

Just a note that I have edited the post above to correct a typo or two - errors that actually altered the sense of the content.

Cheers,

Jon

Through the many changes, was there ever a change to the M42 55mm/1.8 optical design other than improved coatings?

I've seen info on the web implying that that the Super Takumar and later M42 versions of the 55mm/1.8 and 2.0 had thorium oxide in some of the glass, but not enough to cause a yellowing effect. I'd like to know when such glass was introduced into the 55mm/1.8 design.

wow..11 versions!
this will be interesting Smile

the almost identical serial number of your Auto Taks, and this version not being documented, suggest that there were very few made.
The coincidence thus could be that you both have the same version at all, less the nearness of the serial number??

Counted them again - actually only 10 (2 identical but with interesting serial numbers Embarassed) - still need the original Takumar 1.8/55, Auto-Takumar 1.8/55 preset (in all-black finish), and their neighbour, the Auto-Takumar 1.9/55.

I came across a Super Tak 55mm f1.8 a few weeks ago that is set up like an S- M-C Tak on its mounting base. I need to make some images of it.

I would be interested as I have recently purchased a Pentax H2 and am looking for an appropriate standard lens for it. I'd rather not buy one with "glitches" Smile

Thanks, Kris.

Any of the auto-taks and preset lenses should work o.k. with the H2. The H2 actually pre-dates the H3v and H1a (SV & S1a) including the early versions.

This is known as the 1.8/55 Model II - it has the light meter coupling pins, but not the multi-coating. The 2/55 is also available as a "Model II".

Thanks for the info. I had never encountered this variation before. Is it in Oosten's book? I can't afford that book at $450 USD.

Was there ever a version of the Super-Multi-Coated 1.8 55mm WITHOUT the meter coupling pins? Does it then have the SMC coatings? Is there some other place on the net with information about all these versions?
