I have seen that effect in one movie, and I couldnt find out how it was done.

Than I tried this on my camera and it worked...you just have to put something before your lens, like comb

...I have even seen heart-shaped bokeh etc using that technique!

That's what I like about this place - you learn something new every day. Not that this is something I would actually want to do.

If you DO want to play with it, all you have to do is take a piece of black construction paper, cut a hole (or holes, lines, etc) in it, and tape it to the front of the lens. It's not that useful for much other than cutesy fun, but it's entertaining enough to try it at least once.

Maybe there was gridded spot in the backgrounds. This is image from a movie.
