Here are two shots made with Biotar 1,5/75 at f/2.8. One is made with the "slim" version (probably post-war but I am not sure) and another one is made with "fat" version. Both lenses are in Exakta mount. Pictures taken with Canon 5D Mark II. Sorry for composition not being identical.

Which one do you prefer and why?

I see no difference, but I guess if you shoot this subject with any lenses I will see also no difference. On canon 5dII from this distance and light, all lenses should same. Canon 5DII is a damn fine camera perform very well with any lenses.

I think I've heard an opinion somewhere that earlier Biotars were better, but I can't see much difference myself. Older version seems to be slightly warmer (I can see that by looking at the glass itself), a tiny bit less contrasty. OK, how about wide open:

My slim copy 1951 post war is sharper a bit than fat one. Difference is little. All are superb lenses, lucky man who have both I think.

Nothing in it mate - I reckon the OOF rendering in the wide open shot with the fat B75 is slightly smoother but that's all really.

I have two fat B75s myself - one Exakta mount and the other M42 and will never part with either.

This lens is probably one of the finest pieces of glass ever made, irrespective of which type; fat or slim. Cool

Enjoy them both - I love mine... Cool

WOW !!!!

Both supreb (if you don't like one of them - my bithday is the next 17) Laughing

I see a little diference in the warm side for the slim, perhaps a bit more contrast in the fat, and a bit more details in the petails in the slim.

the only thing that is possible to say is that the slim seems to have a little less contrast.
For the rest, hard to compare also beacuse the two pictures do not have the same framing and the fat picture seems to have been taken closer to the subject - a fact which would influence bokeh.

I can only lend an opinion form my own trials as these samples are too close in range and light is not dynamic.

I prefer the slim model in use. It is more compact and has a nicer feel of quality.
I also felt that the slightly lower contrast and slightly was of benifit.
The images on B+W film look nicer with a bit better shadow detail.
Lower contrast is better for digital shooting for me as well. Less plasticy digi shots.
Any version of this lens is going to be a champ.
Congrats on having both.

I cannot say which is better or worse, since I have only pre-war 1941
slim model, older than me. Rolling Eyes

One thing I can say is that this lens was made early 40s, and performs
quite extraordinarily considering its age without coating. Shocked

Having two Biotar 1.5/75s is almost a crime to me. Very Happy Laughing

I got two by accident. Bought one and then received a second chance offer for another that I also bid for and lost. The slim version has air bubbles and slight yellow tint. It also has more aperture blades - almost perfect circle.
