I love the sense of something foreboding in a lot of the images, dreamlike and surreal and artistic, all using film and Leica rangefinders. He is a master of darkroom techniques as well. I have a number of his prints on my walls...

Not pleasant portraits of the night, not. Heavy images of reality that he want to show. Strike you or not, but they aren't easy flowers or models.

That is the trick if I can say so. The eye will learn , with time, to see depper and deeper.
Regarding Junku's work : Wonderful ! 
And remember that he used on the majority of these a 50mm fixed focal lenght lens (Leica on a Leica, of course  ) and same film; Fuji Neopan 1600 .
Maybe outdoors he also used those darkening filters because the high film's sensitivity. But that's just a supposition.
PS. Almost same style (high contrast) with lights and shadows is used for B&W work by Trent Parke http://www.in-public.com/TrentParke/gallery/66 which I also like.
