Here a shot with the Leica Summilux 1.4/50mm, version with build in Hood.
And a crop out of this..
The Summilux Bokeh is also very swirly and the highlights in
some of my pictures shows the "Cats Eye-Bokeh-Effect"..
Thats why Leica not advise to use the Summilux in close ups..
But i like this kind of "effect" for some shots..

I like the typical Meyer bokeh as you get with the Trioplan, Primotar, Oreston etc.
This is with a Pentacon Auto 1.8/50 which is a rebadged Oreston:

Here a picture made with the Helios 44-4 58mm f/2.0. The lens is not known for smooth bokeh - but one could alter the bokeh of this lens - and other lenses - with a simple slide film near the iris.
The slide film is exposed with something like a Gaussian formed ND filter:

I know that boke' is a highly subjective matter, but that I think that is the most distracting and jarring OOF I've ever seen from a lens. It's almost impossible to look at what is in focus.
As for my own favorites I prefer the smoother rendering lenses.
The Yashinon 2/50 is one of my favorites for smooth and soft boke'
It's nearly perfect IMO.
The Meyer Oreston is also pretty nice, a pretty good example of a lens that would be helped by more aperture blades though.
The OOF rendering is distinctive but not necessarily distracting.
The Soligor 2.8/105 preset is another lens with beautifully smooth OOF rendering.
Probably my favorite on the strength of boke' alone is the Miranda 2.8/50 preset:
It is pretty smooth, but the combination of very slight bright lining and an 8 leave diaphragm gives the OOF areas just enough sparkle to be interesting in their own right, but without distracting from the focal point of the photographs. |
