I have three 58mm FL lenses, just for fun I did compare them at F1.4.
Remember this is not rigorous test, which I may do in near future. Here it is>

1. Cosina's Auto-Topcor 58/1.4 (same as new Nokton 58/1.2 SLII)
2. Minolta MC Rokkor-PF 58/1.4
3. Minolta MC Rokkor-PG 58/1.2
Anyway they all shot at F1.4 for fairness. Very Happy
Camera is EOS 5D, 1) is M42-mount, 2) and 3) are modified for EF-mount.
Colour and brightness are matched as much as possible by PSE.
Don't take this a serious comparison.

Short history of Minolta normal lenses for SLR:
The first I guess one is Auto Rokkor-PF 55/1.8, the seocnd one is Auto Rokkor-PF 58/1.4,
then MC Rokkor-PF 58/1.4, and MC Rokkor-PG 58/1.4. The rest are 50mm's. Early normal
lenses are those, and P=Penta (Group), F=6, and G=7 elements just if you did not know.
PG 58/1.4 design was copied to make Leica's Summilux-R 50/1.4, so said people. Of course
Leica created their own version based on Minolta's, but their lens designer loved PG 58/1.4.
The last PG 58mm/1.4 has the same coating as PG 58/1.2 which was dubbed as Hark-Eye-
Rokkor. But it is almost impossible to convert PG 58/1.4 to EF-mount, so I cannot compare
with the other 58mm lenses.

I like first one result the best. I not see significant difference.

Is it me and my failing eyesight, or are none of these actually sharp?

By the way I suspect I now have every Minolta lens ever made in 50 - 58mm and I know I now have every Manual Focus Minolta SLR! They are cluttering up three entire shelves, from earliest through SRT101 to last X-700 etc..

Hmm! lol

No real difference ?

I guess the focal point is the corner of the front chocolate (? front rhomboid in wine glass ?).

I did another test with those lenses again, after f5.6 there is not much
difference I can see. They may have different rendering from wide open
to f2.8, which is normally regarded as personal taste area except some
visible vignetting and sharpness. I like to have fun, do not care much
about which is shaper kind of argument.

Since I got my Cosina made Nokton 58mm f/1.4 I always wanted to be able to compare it to Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2. Can you please post more shots with more busy bokeh at wide open for these lenses. I am curious about the highlight circles rendering.

Thanks in advance. Wink

Number three has best bokeh and best sharpness of in focus area in my opinion.

I agree.

What wanderfull lens!!

A lot of greats lenses, I don't know which I have to buy!!!!!!

Familiars situation don't let me buy all the lens that I like.

Orio, please do the definitive test!

No 3 for me too, is that because it is stopped down slightly?

Ah, Peter, you were first.
I don't really know if a turn from f1.2 to f1.4 can cause that, but that was my first thought as well.
Perhaps it's just the "better" lens. Wink

I tend to agree with that from my own observation. I notice similar quality on my 1.2/58. As if the sharpness slider is pushed forward, and the glow (if any) disappears. But I don't know if the bokeh gets creamier as a result. I should pay more attention on that in the future. On the other hand, I love the bokeh from this lens to a point, I have never really try to observe it, just complete trust in that aspect.

I would say, it's just a better lens (note: 'perhaps' is dropped) Very Happy
