The big problem of shooting thick woods is that the mass of foliage creates a cluttered effect, so even the nice autumn colours lose impact in the big busy mass.
Also the effect of the big leaf mass is to make the photo look flat.
I don't think it's related to saturation, these are unavoidable side effects related to the subject itself, this is why I rarely shoot this type of woods.
