Hey MoFo, in this case I simply bracketed exposures, for a total of five
exposures. If I had more time, I would have certainly just taken one
image, based on being able to think about light values. But when I'm
pressed for time, I'll just bracket.
1. According to meter
2. -1
3. -2
4. +1
5. +2
The exposure at -1 was the one I saved.
I was in a hurry, because I had spotted this scene in my rear view
mirror from the car. I had to pull over to a narrow shoulder, so put
on my emergency blinkers. Luckily it was very early, so almost no
traffic. I started down a slope from the road, and ended up sliding
down mud and out of control! I actually slid right into a big mud
puddle, and soaked my lower body. But I held the camera high and
saved it!
Since I knew the light was not going to last, I just quickly set up on a
tripod and just as quickly metered and bracketed. All took place in about
10 seconds. And sure enough....maybe a half-minute later all the color
was gone. _________________

Thanks all of you! The light was right, so that made it a pretty
easy shot. The HARD part was the slipping and sliding to get to
the location.
Dakoo asked how I get there so early...well, I set the alarm for
3am that morning, so that I could allow myself to get to the
northern wilderness beaches not too long past sunrise. And since
this was a "grab and go" image, I DID make it to the beach about
90 minutes after daylight. _________________
