Thank you, Orio! Since this deer was not used to humans, it
took a while to get close. Basically, you need to act like a
deer, and pretend you are feeding from things on the ground.
Then by moving slowly and acting like you don't even
acknowledge the deer's presence, you can get almost within
touching distance.
It took me a little more than an hour to get in close.

Not too difficult to do, tri! Hop a jet, land at Seattle, and you are
about three hours from a trailhead. Another day and a half of
hiking, and you are in the middle of it! I grew up here, so the
familiarity is a big bonus, as I can travel off-trail and still know
where I am in relation to mountain landmarks. It's a joy to have
this friendly alpine country at my disposal. Last year I was out
for 9 days, and only saw one other human - on the first day.
