A bit OT here perhaps, but maybe it's the best place to ask.

What software would members recommend for video editing on Win XP?

I'm not into fancy special FX for mixing, or anything like that, but I'd like a full range of tools for basic editing, adding titles,
and changing audio/adding voice-overs. One essential thing I need is the ability to rotate a couple of vids my son shot with his camera in portrait mode.

Thanks.

I think windows movie maker should be able to handle that, I think it's included in the XP bundle?. I run a mac, so I'm afraid I can't help you more than that.

And I know this is not in the slightest helpful, and might be a bit offensive. But still pretty funny Smile

Hi, Peter!

I really like the "Windows Live Movie Maker" which comes with Win 7.
That doesn't help you a lot, I know. But perhaps you can download it and even use it on XP?

Ahmm... I just checked and no, it needs at least Win Vista. Sad

But this one should work: http://www.chip.de/downloads/Windows-Movie-Maker_37804964.html

It's from a German site. You surely can find it in English as well.

Alternatively, you could try that one:

Not guilty! Smile I don't want to shoot videos in portrait mode, I want to rotate some that my son took, so we don't have to break our necks looking sideways!

Thanks for the suggestion Carsten. I've used Windows Movie Maker before. It does most of what I need and it has lots of fancy (but unwanted) effects and transitions, but it can't do something as basic as rotating the picture, which for my current project is essential.

I downloaded a trial version of Adobe Premier but I never got as far as trying it. I got a blue screen when I tried to install it and had to do a system restore.

Anybody tried Sony Vegas?

Wow, that's really helpful, thank you both very much. I knew how to rotate to view videos in VLC but that doesn't help much, because I want to make a single video out of several short clips, two shot in portrait and two in landscape, and I can't see any way of doing that and saving it with VLC. I'd like to add a music soundtrack too.

My son used a Pentax K-x to shoot the videos and he didn't realise at first that holding the camera in portrait mode would turn the video 90°. It's an easy mistake to make, I even did it myself Embarassed but now the lesson is learnt he won't be doing it again. Unfortunately the few seconds he shot sideways are fairly precious.

The other two programs both look very useful indeed, I need to try them out and report back.

Out of interest, what software do professional video editors use? Surely not Windows MM!!! Smile

We all do it, it's fairly easy to forget when shooting video with the iPhone, but I recently did it with my dSLR aswell Smile.
And yes, it's always the precious moments when you get all excited that end up that way Smile

My workflow would be: rotate the videos you have to rotate with MPEG Streamclip (www.squared5.com), that is a very powerful free video converter, export it in a non or little compressed avi, and then edit the clips together with moviemaker.

Or you can try wax(http://www.debugmode.com/wax/) that should be one of the most complete free softwares available.
I never used it, but it has a decent reputation.

It depends on the kind of editing you need to do and the workflow your editing work must be put in, but mostly:
- Final Cut Pro by apple, only for macs
- Adobe Premiere Pro, that used to be very unreliable under some aspect, and so really not respected at pro level, but the latest versions are ok for me
- AVID, but it's not so much user friendly, and to have it working at its best it's better to have one of the super expensive versions with dedicated hardware
- Sony Vegas

Personally I usually work on Final Cut when pure editing (choose shot, cut, place in timeline, synch with audio, some titling) is the core of what I must do, or Premiere when the main focus is on Post Production, mostly because of its easily interfacing with Adobe After Effects, which is my main working instrument.

I have the MPEG streamclip and it works well for me.

most professional nowaday either use Final cut Pro or Premier Pro. And many are switching from Final cut to premier. Because you're not trying to do this professionally, try Sony Vegas. I think it can get most of the basics done. Also, you might want to look into pinnacle studio for cheap.

Some 6, 7 years ago I had been using an early version just before it was bought by Sony, still being called "Vegas Sonic Foundry" I believe it was, resp. later first version under Sony brand. Vegas then, according to opinions and recommendations at video related internet forums, had been considered to be one of the best and having a rather intuitive interface, the later for that early version I can confirm

Certainly Sony Vegas should still be a very powerful video editing software, even if pros prefer another, most likely still among the best.

you can download free trial version directly from Sony: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/trials
it is possible to rotate in Sony Vegas, many results at google, but maybe many ways to do it but not one streight forward way? anyway, two results in google: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kerryank/2859321482/ http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090515062337AA8ZGye

So it does! I'd searched for "rotate" in the Help panel and it came up with nothing, so I assumed it couldn't do it. It's under Video Effects. Thanks very much for the tip!

I've made a short movie from one of the clips where the camera moved from landscape to portrait. I split the file, edited out the transition and rotated the second part 270°. The picture becomes a little distorted (squashed horizontally) but it's good enough for what I need. If you're not too squeamish you can view it here: Smile

Digital Media Converter is a good free audio video converter software that also converts every type of media file. No adware, and completely virus free. Supports almost any file format and it is a fast converter. The Pro version allows rotation.

Now I've quoted you I can check out your link and look at the software, and I'll get back to you when I've had a look. And you can now
post pictures and live links - I'm looking forward to seeing them.

You are going to have a hell of a time with Win XP, because nobody is developing for XP anymore, and so anything you find from that era will lack most of the codecs now in use.

Avid now has a free version of Media Composer called First which is full featured with all effects active, and with only very limited restrictions like only eight audio tracks and only five bins per project. Unfortunately it will only run on a decent Win 10 machine. But for those who are serious about video editing Avid is top of the game, and it is totally free including periodic upgrades. It does have a steep learning curve though.
