If you need faster 500mm than f8 try to get MTO 500mm f6.3 a monster also but it has lot less weight and shorter too and very , very sharp!

it gives acceptable IQ already wide open and good IQ at F8.
I use it only on a massive tripod and I modified focusing - I was not able to focus on infinity with my m42-EOS adapter.

Shooting the Pentacon 500 with the cone shaped M42 with a M42/EOS adapter on Canon bodies I was able to achieve infinity.
The Meyer Optik Orestegor 300 that acquired last year,had an adapter with a series of stepped rings.When I got the lens,I wasn't able to achieve infinity focus.So I ordered the cone shaped Pentacon 500/300mm m42 adapter/mount from Germany.While waiting to receive this,I decided to take the first & second step ring off the mount.I then mounted the first step ring back on the mount,minus the middle ring.I was then able to obtain infinity with the lens.So apparently there are more then the cone shaped m42 mount/adapters.
BTW trifox,the lens is heavy and quite the beast,but takes decent pics stopped down.I wouldn't use this for a BIF(Birds in Flight)lens because it's large,cumbersome and not the quickest or the easiest to a spot on sharp focus.Mounted on a solid tripod and shot with much patience is a capable lens.I usually use some of my longer lenses or one of my mirror lenses,but occasionally I take this big bad boy out for some exercise.
Some long range pics and tests against other lenses...scroll down to the 500mm lens tests and further down to 1000mm as the lens go against a few lenses including the Carl Zeiss Oberkochen f/5.6 / 1000mm Mirotar ...scroll further down for tests in 2007 against f5.6 & f8 500mm Rubinar mirror lenses and a F8 600mm Arsat mirror lens...there is also a 2007 1000mm & 1200mm test.

I had some long range pics but can't locate them at the moment.I'll add some long range pics with the lens to my photo gallery soon,perhaps tomorrow...I do have a few close and medium distance pics with the lens in the gallery now.
I've also tested the lens against 10 other lens from 500mm to 800mm at 30 & 75 meters with much patience.The lens did quite well in these tests,but only because I was being slow and deliberate.If you wish to see the results,I can email to you if you send me your address.

It's Canon, I mentioned m42-EOS adapter in my post above.
350D was used for the tests.
I removed a couple of screws from the focusing part, now I focus by rotating the entire lens, now I can reach infinity and focusing is much easier.
In general, the quality is Ok, a limiting factor for me is the temperature - the flows of the hot air from the earth surface makes use of 500mm lens very difficult in summer.

The advantage of such modification is that now focusing is much easier, and disadvantage is that I have to be careful when changing aperture - not to rotate the lens - but it's not too complicated.

The whole lens, except for the part next to the focusing ring where you have tripod ring and camera.
In your case the lens is moving forward - backward when you rotate the focusing ring ( distance between the lenses is the same), in my case it rotates because I removed 2 screws.
