A question regarding lens description

Since I have been forced to remain seated at my computer going through this websites information (Attila - when am I allowed to go potty?) I ran across the term "1Q" in several lens descriptions - I will make a wild guess that it denotes one quartz lens element. Am I correct ?

I've always understood that the 1Q (a '1' inside a 'Q') stood for top-quality / first class quality and was an export-related thing...

Yep, highest quality mark of former GDR lenses.

Thank you for the answer. Never having paid any attention, before this week , to German M42 lenses I did not have a clue.

IQ is for image quality - or at least, this is how I mean it.

I think greg means the symbol on German lenses.

There are many symbols which can be found on German and CCCP lenses:

CCCP

Manufacturers logos :

http://cameras.alfredklomp.com/logos/
http://www.zenit.istra.ru/qa/qa-logos.html

  • MC - Multi-Coated, multi-layered anti-reflexive coating (appears at 80' on CCCP optics)
  • MS - appears on some export lenses e.g. Helios 77M. Just a translation mistake of "MC" (C in cyrilic means S in roman alphabet)
  • Π - Russian letter P, analogy to Zeiss T, abbreviation of word "prosvetlenije", which means...something like "transilluminated" - simply: coated (on CCCP optics from the beginning of 60')
  • P - see Π (letter P was used for export products)
  • T - means optics designed for TV cameras usually

German optics

  • 1Q - Q with number 1 inscribed means "Erste Qualität", first quality (1Q marked lens can be used for export)
  • Δ - triangle on German optics means version for transport. There can be other symbols inscribed in the triangle:
    • 1 - export quality, first class
    • 2 - export quality, second class
    • S - export quality, special (?)
  • MC - sometimes in red, means Multi-Coated, multi-layered anti-reflexive coating
  • T - better version of Zeiss coating called "Transparentz", which transmits 80% of light. Developed in 1935, but till 1940 used only for army purposes. Some T marked lenses can have better iris (more blades - e.g. some pre-set Biotars)
  • T* - Zeiss, MC layers which can transmit at leas 90% of light. Used from the beginning of 70' by Zeiss Oberkochen
  • V - Meyer Görlitz, means "vergütet" - coated. Meyers V coating on inner lens elements is extremely soft and can be damaged even by harder brush

Thanks for the listing of Russian and German lens markings. It sure cleared up a few more questions I had found since starting on this long, winding, uphill journey back to MF.

I know this is an old post, but I only just started wondering about the triangle markings on some of my lenses. Do you know if the ΔS or Δ1 is a “higher” quality grade marking, or does it have any significance at all? I see some eBay sellers advertising the Δ1 or 1Q as “highest quality”, but based on this list the “special” sounds better, unless it means retarded… =)
