I made a jig from ABS plastic to hold the lens in a cradle so I have my hands free to use the punch and strike it without needing three hands.









The cradle is held to the base by self tapping screws so I make new cradles as I need them. I line the cradle with a layer of electrical insulating tape which helps to preserve the paint finish on the lens.

The punch is also ABS plastic, and again I use electrical tape on the end, maybe two layers, to help preserve the internal filter thread.

I've repaired a couple of badly damaged lenses with this, and been able to screw filters into them. Sadly I have no pictures of the before and after though.

Those are really nice jigs. In construction and function. Fine tools. I think these provide much more control than the custom pliers method.

For a 3rd hand I'd recommend paying a visit to Fukushima. You never know when you might need one Very Happy
