Really instructional video, Carsten. Thank you very much!!

I suspect that for low end Autofocus lenses of today, many of these processes may be automated in chains. Which I think can be an explanation why so many autofocus lenses owners are angry about the copy variations and quality control Wink

This video also makes it clear why building care and quality control are so important. And why even prestigious firms like Carl Zeiss Jena have had difficult moments with quality control in the economical difficult situation of last years of DDR: manual lens building is a work that really requires technicians that are expert, qualified, and well motivated.
It's not like building an everyday object.

Wow. That was excellent. JML seemed vaguely familiar, but on looking up their website I see it probably wasn't from camera lenses, so must have been some other piece of optical equipment I've encountered.

Excellent video.
What intrigues me is that somewhere at the end it says that they need 6 weeks to build a lens.
It seems to much to me. It would cost a fortune taht lens.

Maybe it takes 6 weeks to build a lens but workers can work on more than one lens per day.

Thanks for another nice link!
It seems that today, glass creation is 90% done by machines (except for very large glasses), glass polishing is completely done by machines, and the only process that remains manual is the lens assembling.

BTW what is that yucky fluorite in the middle of a tele lens Evil or Very Mad

I dont know if all lenses are assembled by hand, those were after all canon L lenses...i doubt cheap plastic lenses are assembled the same way...maybe im wrong, just assuming Smile

Anyhow, very interesting topic,at least for me,i always liked to see how lenses are made,so if anyone have some interesting link it would be great to share.

Smile

Yes, if L lenses are mostly made by machines, we can just imagine how cheap lenses might be made Evil or Very Mad

6 weeks ? It's fast, compared to the rumored 18 months it takes to cool the glass used in 2 elements of the Noctilux 50 1.0 Leitz lens... this glass could cost 45 times Nikon ED or Canon L ones... Rolling Eyes

Are you going to corner the kit lens market?
