Logged into the swedish ebay today to check some stuff, and without any reason at all I checked M42 lenses. And at the top there was this "Helios-44-2 2/58 (2.0/58mm) M42" for €1.5, ending in < 1 minute. So i put a bid of for €5 and won it for €2.5. Did I miss something? Granted I don't know what I have bought, but I have seen a few good pictures with a Helios and I thought it would be a good idea to take a chance.

So did I make a mistake buying something I think is good, but in reality suck? Very Happy

PS. Got a A Schacht Ulm Travenar 1:2.8/50 R M42 aswell, for €2.5 from same guy. So two lenses for the LBA tonight, total $7.50 including shipping.

Congratulations, sounds like a bargain!

Assuming the listing did not have warning phrases like "needs work", "as seen", "for parts or repair", "some fungus" etc.

For the Helios, you have gotten a bargain. It's a nice lens, very adequate for closeups with extension tubes. I like it also as a general lens. Among the 44's the 44-2 is the best (to me).
Congrats!

Jes.

Nah, states "shows usage", but also says lenses are scratch/dirt free. Dunno if i trust it though, but the guy seem to sell alot of camera stuff.

The other lense was bashed though and well used. Have a dent on the filtermount too, but I think i can straighten that out Wink. But glass is said to be fine on that one too.

I bring to you, pictars! Surprised

EDIT: Says they both functional properly btw.

For some reason Schacht lenses seem to go for a lot on US ebay.

If you don't like them you can make money doing lens arbitrage between ebays !

To repair a dented filter ring, I recommend this tool: Click here to see on Ebay -- it's more expensive than your Travenar, but you will be able to use it on many more lenses bought cheaply because of a dented filter ring Wink. The seller (23filters) also sells many other fine lens repair tools. I have recently bought a spanner wrench set and I am very satisfied of the quality.

Cheers!

Well, that will have to wait for a later stage. I just started my collection and need to fill up the empty space. Wink I have however decided to stick to Super and SMC Takumars until i get going and learn more about lenses. I'll keep the Helios though I believe.

That does look useful and I do have a Pentacon Electric 135/2.8f that also have a small dent to the filter ring. But I think I'll just use them as is until I get some more expensive lenses to fix. Can't really justify a ?25 buy of a tool to fix two lenses that total at ?5. Wink. I'd rather spend the cash on lenses for now.

I decided about a month ago that I was to start using manual lenses. And about 2 weeks ago I decided I am going to collect them. But I think I have started out well acctually, already made some quite good bargains in my own opinion.

No, these lenses are really good and yet go for very little money. They are still underrated.

"Schacht" is a German name, so it will sell for a high price in the States in in Asia. I guess German names are connected to Zeiss and Leica, so people think.

My spanner wrench set from this seller was cheap and crappy , black sets. They have different ones.

And today I got a tamron delivered to me that I bought for €10. 200mm, turns out that even though the previous owner said it wasnt (probably did not know), it was an adapt-all :p. So now I got an adapter for free. :p

Hi

I'm a newbie who literally found this site a few minutes ago, and I felt compelled to reply on this Topic.

I have an Olympus E-1 and a couple of months back I decided to try bolting on lenses left over from my film days, Pentax 50mm f1.7, Pentax 80-200 f4.5-5.6 and... a Helios 44-2 rescued from my Zenith in the loft.

I tried a quick comparison between these lenses, a Hoya 135mm (I just added to my collection) and the E-1 kit lens (Zuiko 14-45).

To it's credit the Helios (stopped down to 5.6) easily matched the sharpness of the Pentax 50mm at the same apeture and the Zuiko at F11 (ie stopped down a couple). Along with the sharpness it shows slightly more contrast and warmer, richer colours - so it just slipped into first place.

I use it (with extension tubes) for my macro shots, and is today sat here in my bag at work attached to my E-1.

Yep, I love this (30 year old) lens!

Regards

Barry
