The 3rd lens I won today on ebay is this:

After seeing Luis and Patrick's results, can't wait to try some of these
lenses with the focusing tubes that hopefully be arriving soon.

Tominon was a trademark of Tomioka, so its parentage certainly can't be faulted.

On my Pentax with the Accura focusing tube I figure I can probably get a 90mm to focus to infinity, as my 101mm Wollensak needs @7mm extension to get to infinity, and it has 2mm+ of body cap besides, I can certainly rig it without a body cap if necessary.

75mm ? Maybe, depending on the optics and the flange distance of your camera. " target="_blank">Click here to see on Ebay

Luis, yes, I knew its lineage was Tomioka, just was wondering if anyone
has tried these lenses. What do you do to mount them to an M42 body cap?
Mainly how do you cut the hole in the cap, using a coping saw or something
else?

OK, tested this lens today using the Accura focusing tubes. All these are
at either wide open f4.5, or f5.6:

The Tominon lens is threaded, slightly smaller diameter than M39, so used
electrician tape strips to shim it up to fit the tubes

just WOW! Excellent!

Good to see the stray cat is letting you get closer.
Taping the lens to the camera huh, next thing you know you will be holding film in your teeth.

Very nice shots, I can even see a web or hair on the red leaf.

Hard to judge DOF with that set-up?

First class samples Bill !

And that cat has mesmerizing eyes. You have earned a new fantastic model!

Thanks, Attila, Mike, and Orio!

Orio, yes, he's making a great model!

Mike, not too bad judging DOF, just took some pics of the setup to post
here.

Thanks again, guys,

Bill

Very impressive Bill. I was wondering about the depth of field too - as an enlarger lens it's designed to focus an image onto a flat plane so I'd be interested to see the results on a 3D subject at different aperture settings. How did you get on with infinity focus using the tubes?

Here's a couple craptacular pics with the Canon G2, should've used flash:

I used only the largest tube with these shots. The Tominon is pancake size
or smaller. Pretty sharp lens, Tessar design...

Peter, haven't really tried any other shots yet. I'm happy the lens is a
sharp one, looks like brand new, and will be experimenting more in future
with it.

Thats superb !

Wonderful work using DOF. Your #3 is fantastic.

Does the thing get to infinity ? If not, how far can you go ?

PostPosted: Sun Jun 22, 2008 2:12 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Luis, thanks! I haven't yet figured infinity focus. I've tried various combinations with the tubes, but I think it will, if at all, be just jamming
the lens onto the M42 adapter, basically turning the DSLR into a box
camera. Will see what happens tomorrow.

Here's a couple more from today:

bokeh test:

and another damn daisy shot:

these samples look super good,
the last one is simply amazing!

This is an enlarger lens, is it? I have seen similar lenses being sold quite cheaply at online auction here in Japan.
And I am very curious about the tube you mention. How does it work?

let me mention here:
Yesterday I had found this great used camera store ( scored a S.M.C. Takumar 50mm f1.4 without caps but good condition for 18 USD ) and they had two pieces which lookes very curious to me:

1: made by Pentax a M42 flexible tube introducing variable distance between mount and lens starting at around 1cm only, up to about 3 cm? I guess made for Macro shooting. Price tag was over 100 USD though
2: made by Tomioka a M42 flexible tele adapter. Looked like a grrat piece of machinery, multiplying factor could be changed stepless between 2x to 3x, price tag just over 50 USD.

What is your take on those? and I could have asked the same question at the recent 'show me your bokeh' thread, as I do not understand but I am very curious about vilva's set up

cheers,
Andreas

Andreas, thanks for your kind comments.

If it were me, I'd get the Tomioka setup for >$50, sounds interesting and
versatile. The Pentax variable focus tube seems to command ridiculous
prices even over here in the states on ebay. Tomioka is the company Zeiss
anointed as their Japanese operations (well, Kyocera took over Tomioka)
and make quality gear.

Good buy on the SMC Takumar 50/1.4, hope to see some pics!

The Accura focusing tubes I got for $10 from an Australian seller, and
is 4 pieces with the largest tube having the focusing sleeve, pretty neat
device.

The Tominon is an enlarger lens (see my link to actual ebay auction above)
and is quite sharp. The jury is still out for anything like infinity focus or
deeper DOF stuff, will have to see.

Thanks again for your comments,

Bill

Magnificent and very addictive. I am still trying mine out and have yet to uncover consistent results. You are way ahead of me. I find the 80 can't go to infinity, so 90 may be a very good starter. I have found the DOF can be quite startling at around f22!

Thanks for the kind words, Patrick, and you are way too modest! Infinity
focus with this lens must be something like one lightyear, unfortunately, I
can't see that far! Laughing Will be looking for enlarger lenses in the 90-100mm
focal length. Anyhoo, this pic was shot using Shutter Priority, 1/125sec, at
f8 (I think). Came out underexposed so had to use some crude PP to beam
it up, which explains the noise.

The Tominons were made as a set for a copy and macro camera system and are known (to some) as the best performance / price relation macro lens from 17mm ... 135mm. Still today sometimes whole sets are being sold for about $100. All these lenses can be found on my site here
http://www.macrolenses.de/objektive.php and look for TOMIOKA as maker. The thread mount is M40x0.75 which fits directly into a size I shutter (or the older Leitz Aristophot macro camera). There are special adaptor rings to M39 (Leica) thread mount, which can be had through me, but I guess people here may prefer duct tape. All these lenses are good for 4x5" (9x12 cm) format, so also perfect for tilt/shift.

Klaus, thanks much for the info! If I can find more of these in the set, I'll
be talking to you about the M39 adapter. I find this lens beyond sharp,
very pleased with it!

40x0.75 is also the thread on Exakta macro rings (these screw together, with Exakta mounts screwed onto the ends).

Its also the size of thread on some Steinheil lens heads (like on my Culminar) to use them on Exakta macro equipment or Visoflex focusing mounts or bellows, and there was supposed to be a 40>39mm adapter for them.

I thought maybe there are other lenses that have the same thread, and it looks like thats the case with Tomioka.

I use my Culminar on my Exakta bellows this way.
