Since we've been getting such a good exchange in regards to photo scanning - I thought I'd ask a question or 2 . . .

Those who have a scanner capable of going good photo scanning. . .
a) Do you plan to do some archiving with it?

First I got my scanner so I could get better scans for posting purposes. Things changed a bit when I realized the potential to archive many of the pictures I've taken over the years.

b) Are you planning on revisiting shots of the past to see if they can be helped / saved?

I guess related to the above answer, yes. Following what David (my stepson) said when he quoted Ansel Adams in regards to negs = scores & prints = performances, I've been wondering how many of my past pictures could have produced better prints - as I had experienced. Secondly with the loss of my Mom and the photos that popped up that were forgotten about - I've been thinking about doing my own personal archive - might even try original b+w negs or those funky aquare format negs - 126 and 110 Smile But then I'm just being ambitious Smile

Jim,
The original reason that I bought my scanner, was to archive all the family photos. We have many albums full of photos, so this is going to take some time. One advantage is that when complete, I can send CD/DVD to members of the family. That way we all have copies in case something happens to originals.

If after scanning (photo or negative) I feel it could use some work, I will try and fix it as best I can. We have the technology - why not use it.

Irrelevant of it being a scan or a digital camera image I am always reviewing images.
There is a school of thought that believes those who don’t can’t be learning anything or making any progress. You look at an image you did a couple of years ago and in theory you should always be able to improve it.

a - Done my archiving of old prints negs and slides.

b - Yes always, but don't waste time trying to save a poor image. Time is better spent making a good one even better or re-shooting poor ones.

One of my BIG regrets is the loss of many negs due to traveling around Europe and also because I don't own the copyright to them.

Re Ansel Adams. In his latter years he actually hated all his old work and began to reprint everything. I think that is a great example to us all.
