Stumbled across these (presumably) Shetland ponies in the New Forest yesterday, they are great fun but looked a little cold! The brown one couldn't resist licking the Planar a bit, hence I only just managed to focus the shot and missed a couple of brilliant ones! Laughing

#1 - Bit icy out!

#2 - Not loads of snow, but enough!

#3 - The small ponies were drinking from the frozen river, bless!

#4 - And with the Planar

#5 - They were very friendly alright!

#6 - Perhaps TOO friendly Laughing

#7 - Portrait

#8 - Dont slide in now! Surprised

#9 - The white one was mega cute

#10 - My other half getting some close ups!

#11 - Taling of closeups...the white one took a liking for my Distagon! Didn't lick it like the brown one did to the Planar though Laughing

#12 - Lost interest...

#13 - "Ooh that lady's got an Sony...I like the taste of Sony..."

#14 - Sun starts to go down and I sudden;y wish I'd bought a hood!

Thanks Smile I must confess I struggled with the snow though...overexposed the snow only to blow out the sky!

These were taken in Ashurst, just behind the "New Forest" pub (formally New Forest Hotel) and in front of the camp site. In fact it's a two minute walk from teh Ashurst New Forest railway station. The horses are seriously friendly Laughing

superb series! I cannot see all of them but those I see are all great
a hood doesn't help when the sun is in the frame

You made no mistake. It's much better to have nice white snow with some burned out sky, than to have good sky with dull grey snow. Since snow is either the main subject or a main element anyway, the shots are technically perfect.
Great series, very fun! First picture is my favourite, love the subtle shadings of the frozen water.

Super series Shrek. I believe they are the indigenous ponies that are culled each year with the culls sold to the public. New Forest used to be the place where the deer were managed to provide food for the army (time of the Normans). One of England's greatest treasures.

Stunning,Beautiful,Thank you for sharing lovely little ponies..(by culled you don't mean shot??) We have native horses called brumbies in the national park and they are debating right now whether to shoot them to protect the flora and fauna...grrrrr..Idiots!!!...maybe the one drinking from the river had its lips stuck to the ice.... Laughing

Thanks for the comments guys, it was a fun but very cold shoot! I took about an hour to defrost afterwards Laughing

Thankfully all the gear is alright and the Planar looks fine after I cleaned off the horse slobber Laughing I'll put up a full series of shots in the cafe section later in the week...I took about four shots of one of the horses walking towards me and then trying to eat the lens Laughing

Poilu - you are absolutely right about the hood, the cold weather must be getting to me Surprised

Orio - many thanks, I was lucky in that we had snow last February as well, so I had a bit of practice then as well Smile

Patrickh - I lived in the New Forest for most of my childhood, but am ashamed to say I don't know very much about the origins of the wildlife. I will make it my mission to investigate further! It's such a beautiful part of the country.

Mo-fo - those horses were bashing small holes in the ice and drinking through it! Fair play to them!

@MoFo
The culls are auctioned off and I believe there is usually a wait list. I don't think you get many "cheval burgers" from them.

Shrek

There are trees in there that are documented in the Doomsday Book. There are families in that same book who are still there. It's a truly amazing place.

I see.... to cull in Australia means shooting to kill (unless I am mistaken) I am thinking when they "cull" the kangeroos it means to reduce the population by mass shootings and the same with the Brumbies although they did have people who were allowed to capture them and sell them, but it looks like this practice maybe ending in favour of killing them all...again.... Idiots!!.

That New forest sounds like a great place for photos...although maybe in the warmer months Very Happy
