The tale of three Tamrons...

OK, I've been building up a rather large collection of lenses just recently, and haven't really had the weather to get outside and test them properly. This has left me a tad bored, so I thought I'd conduct a (probably totally unscientific) test of some of my recent Tamrons. They were all shot from a tripod located in the same place, attached to my Sony a200 as ever.

I struggled a bit with white balance (my camera's terrible indoors!) so needed a touch of pp from RAW to get them looking normal. It should be noted that the 58a produced the whitest images, the 103a were slightly yellower in appearance and the 670 aU's were very vintage looking indeed! Sharpening was left to Adobe's standard setting (whoops!) i.e. 25.

OK, the contenders:

From above:

Hope this is of some use to you out there! IMO, it looks like the 58a might be damaged as it REALLY struggled until F11. The 103a is simply stunning (IMO) and the 560aU is soft wide open but quite nice (and a handy focal length) stepped down a bit.

Giood tests.

I would have expected better of the 300mm Adaptamatic. I have seen very nice results from this lens. I am still looking for it to complete my Adaptamatic collection. On something like a 300mm you do want it to give decent results wide-open, as the already smallish aperture and the need for faster shutter speeds lead to a lot of wide-open shooting.

There could be something wrong with that particular one of course.

I have the 03A 80-210, the previous version of the 103A, and its really very good, I am not surprised the 103A which is supposed to be superior - and has a glowing write-up on the Adaptall site - does so well.
