The most crazy bokeh!

Hi... Smile

I have an on/ off relationship with manual focus lenses. ;p

Basically I know I will not find what I want with a newer lens.

I want either a 50 mm or 85mm lens. Probably more the 50mm though...

It needs to be sharp, it has to produce photos that look 3d, and most importantly it has to produce that bokeh that some people like and most people hate. You know the one, really swirly with really bright edges. Bokeh that looks like it is lit.

I quickly found this photo on the forum, contacted the member and waiting for a response. Something like this...(not sure if i should post someone elses photo... will take it down if not. thankyou)

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/8049/imgp36461kp1.jpg

What do you recommend?

I have used in the past zenit fisheye, carl zeiss 35mm, takumar 50mm 1.4, jupiter 85mm, zeiss 135 3.5 . I only have the zeiss 35mm and jupiter at the moment. Don't think either these produce the look I want.

Thankyou.

In my own experience, the sharpest 50mm lenses are the Nikkor 1.4/50 AIS and the Leica Summicron 2/50, both stopped down of course.

For 3D, either the Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 or the Leica Summicron 2/50

For this, definitely the Zeiss Biotar 2/58.
Or the Helios-44 2/58, which is a copy of the Biotar.

Oh Thankyou Orio..

This was the photo, it never posted before.

Anyone know what that lens might be? User is called Riku on here.

The Helios is really cheap and easy to find, that may be the one. Infact I have a friend who has one! Never uses it, so I have never seen the results. I will have a search for the others, but I think they will be more elusive.

Any others that can confirm, or suggest any more. Smile

If you want strange bokeh, look at this. It happens to about one in fifty of my shots with that lens.

What lens is that! woa, it looks like the background is made out of a sheet of melting plastic or something!

Thanks.

Has anyone else got some suggestions?

Is Riku about? Smile

Hi. I'm new to photography (<1 year) and to manual lens(es) in particular. However the bokeh you illustrate reminds me of some shots I took using a Nikkor 1.8/50mm. If you visit alamy.com and look at image AXRDRJ you'll see something which comes close (Nikkor 1.8/50mm at f5.6). I've got some better examples but none are immediately accessible at the moment.

Nice to see you here !

Zewrak I don't think it's bokeh, look at the skirt of your model, it is in focus, yet it suffers from the strange effect.

PostPosted: Fri Jun 20, 2008 8:41 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Thanks for the suggestion. The image and the bokeh is pretty standard for a 50mm lens, just a good normal look.

If you look at the dog picture I posted up by Riku, the background bokeh is bright! With very distinct doughnut bright rings which makes each point of light very pronounced and separated.

ideally I just want to know the lens this photographer used.... Smile

Thanks for the welcome. I'll have to learn how to post my images myself. For the moment, thanks.

I allowed built-in upload for you. You can found above post message box at right top hand side "Upload Picture"

Hm.. Got any suggestions to what might cause it? I have seen it 4-5 times, but no consistency in the images, all very different, unfortunally thats the only one I have left. I shall try to remember to save the next one if i get one again. I did consider if it was the shake reduction that did something funky. But that seem strange, since the centre of the image is fine.

Do you get this problem with film or digital?

PostPosted: Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:09 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

If you look for a rare bokeh, the 35 mm version of the imagon, the fujinon 85 F/4 SF can give you a original background. I don't like it, but as "original", it is.

Mine most odd bokeh is from Color Reflex (Porst) 1.2/55
Aperture is struck - wide open and some photos look "normal, other not
strange bokeh

Tomioka? If it is, they have a great fame and your shot it's in this class

This is not Tomioka, I assume that it is made by Cosina Japan.

Only tried it with the K10D. My analog work is still in the pit waiting to take off. Will use it on a Spotmatic in a few weeks, will see then if it appears.

That "effect" is strange. Since you are getting it with just one lens, I would blame it on the lens rather then on the camera. A test with another camera would be useful.

Time ago I had a similar problem and was one element near the diaphragm (aligned question)

hey,

well I just bought a Helios-40 1.5 85mm.

aaaaahhhh! Smile

I wanted this lens before, but was worried about buying from outside of Uk. I just paid about 140£ for it including p+p.

That is probably too much, is it? Way I see it, it is a lot cheaper than a canon 1.2 and still a fair bit cheaper than a canon 1.8, and neither of those lenses has a look matching that helios Very Happy...

It will replace my Jupiter. Will probably sell the jupiter, unless I get the Helios and prefer the jupiter. Do not like having two same focal length lenses.

So I will have Flektagon 2.4, helios 1.5. Now I still need a 50mm... I will keep searching.

I will post a picture from my Flek in the gallery.

I think 35mm, 50mm and 85mm is the perfect 3. Smile
