I can see how this lens might have problems in the corners on full frame but on crop it stands a good chance of becoming one of my favourite zooms. Yes, the focal range covering lengths from just 24 to 35mm seems almost pointless at first thought, but look at it the other way. It's essentially three wide primes packed into one! Zooms (at least early Minolta ones) tend to compromise many features in order to accomodate for a variable focal length, like size, aperture and MFD. But this lens is different. It's not really much larger than that the 24/2.8, not that much slower (constant f/3.5 aperture throughout the range) and focuses down to 0.3m. On top of that it's also sharp enough to the corners on APS-C from wide open!

The only negatives are the slightly awkward handling of the zoom ring (mine also has a little too much resistance) and a little too short travel of the focus ring. Other than that, no complaints.

The lens:

Most photos are wide open, mostly nearer 24 than 35mm. Exif might not be accurate.

Given its small size, the MD 24-35mm is surprisingly OK even on FF A7. Only the corners are quite bad:

If performance over the entire FF field is more important, i would go for the nFD 20-35mm, however.

You should try the 24-50, it really is a great lens and i think the range makes more sense as well!

Nice samples!

Yes, the 24-50mm, I would certainly like to try that one too. But it's a lot bigger (72mm filter size, 100g more weight), only 0.7m MFD, seems to be quite rare and way more expensive.

Very nice. This is not a super common one of the MD Zooms!

Well a little less common than some, but not super rare either.

Unfortunately yes, i got lucky some day when i could buy a complete X-700 kit which contained this lens, all at a very nice price. Here are some samples on Sony A7:

I'm still looking for a 24-35 from a collectors point of view, but in NL it's quite rare as well, i still don't have one!

Nice samples, looks like a really good lens.

They do appear on ebay quite often I think. BIN prices are around 100 and auctions end mostly around 50. I got mine for 50 or so.

Looks pretty nice!

Has anyone had the chance to compare this with the 24-35/3.5 SMC Pentax-M which is equivalently specced (apart from 0.5m MFD)?

My MD-II 4/50mm is not really better than my MD-III 3.5/24-35mm. It is, however, heavier and bigger.
I don't know the MD-III 24-50mm, however. Since there are visible and reproducible quality differences between the MD-II and MD-III versions of the Minolta 3.5/35-70mm, the same might be true for the MD-II/MD-III 4/24-50mm.

Thanks, that's good to know when looking for the 24-50. Smile

It doesn't handle flares very well but that's to be expected. Otherwise all good. I tend to gravitate towards 24mm rather than 35.

Those images all look very good to my eye. Nice colors, contrast, and seems quite sharp.

Thanks. Yes, sharpness is adequate (but hard to judge from these reduced size samples with too much sharpening by flickr), so is nearly everything else. It's a good lens, at least on crop cameras.
